Abstract: The present paper presents a model for texture discrimination based on Gabor functions. In this model the Gabor power spectrum of the micropatterns corresponding to different textures is calculated. A function that measures the difference between the spectrum of two micropatterns is introduced and its values are correlated with human performance in preattentive detection tasks. In addition, a two stage algorithm for texture segregation is presented. In the first stage the input image is transformed via Gabor filters into a representation image that allows discrimination between features by means of intensity differences. In the second stage the borders between areas of different textures are found using a Laplacian of Gaussian operator. This algorithm is sensitive to energy differences, rotation and spatial frequency and is insensitive to local translation. The model was tested by means of several simulations and was found to be in good correlation with known psychophysical characteristics as texton based texture segregation and micropattern density sensitivity. However, this simple model fails to predict human performance in discrimination tasks based on differences in the density of "terminators". In this case human performance is better than expected.

TL;DR: In this article, the multiresolution local binary patterns (LBPs) algorithm was extended with an orthogonal variance measure for measuring local contrast features (i.e., the extended LBP) to improve the generalization ability of the automated classification of human settlements using only remote sensing data over urban areas.

TL;DR: The results show that the discrimination performance obtained with the proposed cluster-based feature extraction method is superior to the performance obtained using conventional feature extraction methods, and robust to the rotation and scale invariant texture classification.

A hypothesis-based approach to clinical psychophysics and to the design of visual tests: the Proctor Lecture.
TL;DR: A hypothesis of visual processing is outlined that offers a guide to the design of tests for revealing forms of visual loss that are hidden from detection by the classic tests of visual function and examples of the application of the hypothesis are given.

Textons, the elements of texture perception, and their interactions
TL;DR: Research with texture pairs having identical second-order statistics has revealed that the pre-attentive texture discrimination system cannot globally process third- and higher- order statistics, and that discrimination is the result of a few local conspicuous features, called textons.

Two-dimensional spectral analysis of cortical receptive field profiles.
TL;DR: It emerges that only a very special analytic class of receptive fields possess independent tuning functions for spatial frequency and orientation; namely, those profiles whose two-dimensional Fourier Transforms are expressible as the separable product of a radial function and an angular function.

TL;DR: In this article, an image is a brightness function f(x,y) of two space variables x and y, each of which is characterized by a gray level, and the gray levels are assumed to represent the radiant energy of some electromagnetic spectral range.
