Abstract: The combination of simulation and optimization, essentially unheard of in practice a decade ago, is much more accessible today, thanks in large part to the development of commercial optimization software designed for use with existing simulation packages. Despite this growth, untapped applications abound. This panel, which includes developers of simulation-optimization packages, will discuss this untapped potential, barriers to broader applicability, and approaches for overcoming these barriers. This paper starts off with a brief introduction by the panel’s organizer, followed by position statements from the panelists.

Modular architecture for optimizing a configuration of a computer system
David Bartholomew Stewart,Efstathios Papaefstathiou +1 more
- 02 May 2002
TL;DR: In this paper, a modular architecture allows different optimization modules to be plugged into the optimization system and interfaces with different simulators through a simulator interface module, where the simulator is decoupled from the optimization module.

Factory flow design and analysis using internet-enabled simulation-based optimization and automatic model generation
Amos H. C. Ng,Jacob Bernedixen,Matías Urenda Moris,Mats Jägstam +3 more
- 11 Dec 2011
TL;DR: FACTS Analyzer is introduced, a toolset developed based on the concept of integrating model abstraction, automatic model generation and simulation-based optimization under an innovative Internet-based plat-form to enable simulation to become much easier to use and speed up the time-consuming model building, experimentation and optimization processes, in order to support optimal decision making.
