Recent studies have shown that scientists who attend meetings are more likely to cite work discussed in person than results described in sessions they couldn't attend. Attending a talk is effective at increasing the chance of citing the work. Face-to-face interactions in conferences matter. Unplanned talks and networking also contribute to serendipitous spread of information. Chance encounters and opportunities for collaboration are only available in-person. Therefore, hosting and attending in-person events matter and are worth it.
