Estimation of fracture toughness of nitride compound layers on tool steel by application of the Vickers indentation method
TL;DR: In this paper, an investigation of the application of Vickers indentation fracture testing to nitrided and nitrocarburized AISI H11 hot work tool steels is described.

Laser treatment of zirconia surface for improved surface hydrophobicity
TL;DR: In this article, a texturing of yttria stabilized zirconia is carried out under the high pressure nitrogen assisting gas ambient to enhance the surface hydrophobicity and the residual stress formed at the treated surface is determined from the X-ray diffraction data.

Loose abrasive lapping hardness of optical glasses and its interpretation
TL;DR: It is shown that Preston's coefficient has a similar dependence as lapping hardness on glass mechanical properties, as well as a linear dependence on abrasive size for the case of brittle material removal, which leads to the definition of an augmented Preston coefficient during brittlematerial removal.

Effect of W addition on the glass forming ability and mechanical properties of Fe-based metallic glass
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of refractory element W addition on the glass forming ability and mechanical properties of Fe47−xCr20Mo10WxC15B6Y2 alloys were investigated.

Enhancing toughness and strength of SiC ceramics with reduced graphene oxide by HP sintering
TL;DR: In this article, the influence of graphene reinforcement on the sintering process, microstructure, and mechanical properties (fracture toughness, bending strength, and Vickers hardness) of SiC/rGO composites with different content of rGO are investigated.

Electron microscopy of microcracking about indentations in aluminium oxide and silicon carbide
Bernard J. Hockey,Brian R. Lawn +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the nature of microcracking about small-scale indentations in two highly brittle solids, sapphire and carborundum, and found that cleavage steps comprise the main source of obstruction to lattice restoration across the interfaces.

- 14 Feb 1976
TL;DR: In this article, a three part study of indentation fracture in the plastic contact regime is presented, where the first part summarizes the observations of fracture and develops a fracture classification scheme, the second part discusses the implications of the fracture characterization for fracture toughness determinations, and abrasive wear and low velocity erosion prediction.

A simple method for studying slow crack growth.
D. P. Williams,A. G. Evans +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a simple method for studying slow crack growth is described, which entails measurements of load relaxation at constant displacement using a double torsion specimen, and it is demonstrated that the data generated using this technique are in excellent agreement with data obtained using the more complex conventional techniques, for a range of materials - steel, titanium, glass, aluminum oxide, PMMA.
