Formation of binary and ternary colloids and dissolved complexes of organic matter, Fe and As.
284
TL;DR: It is shown that binary and ternary colloids and dissolved complexes of As(V), Fe and organic matter (OM) form at environmentally relevant conditions and these colloids/complexes using ATR-FTIR- and Mossbauer-spectroscopy suggest that As (V) is associated with Fe-OM mainly via ferrihydrite-OM colloids but to a small extent also in dissolved Fe- OM complexes via Fe-bridging.

Abstract: Natural organic matter can change As speciation via redox reactions and complexation influencing its mobility and toxicity Here we show that binary and ternary colloids and dissolved complexes of As(V), Fe and organic matter (OM) form at environmentally relevant conditions and analyzed these colloids/complexes using ATR-FTIR- and Mossbauer-spectroscopy Dissolved Fe-OM complexes and ferrihydrite-OM colloids were formed by reacting OM with ferrihydrite (Fe(OH)(3)) Mossbauer-spectroscopy showed that 95% of the Fe in the Fe-OM fraction were present as ferrihydrite-OM colloids while the remaining 5% were in the dissolved fraction In As(V) plus Fe-OM systems (containing both dissolved and colloidal Fe-OM), 35-8 microg As(V)/mg OC was bound to the Fe-OM complexes/colloids compared to <0015 microg As(V)/mg OC in As-OM systems (without Fe) Upon filtration of As-Fe-OM complexes/colloids with a 3 kDa filter, approximately 6% As was found in the dissolved fraction and approximately 94% As in colloidal Fe-OM This suggests that As(V) is associated with Fe-OM mainly via ferrihydrite-OM colloids but to a small extent also in dissolved Fe-OM complexes via Fe-bridging Since As-contaminated soils and aquifers contain Fe(III) minerals and OM, colloids of As with OM-loaded ferrihydrite and complexes of As with dissolved Fe-OM have to be considered when studying As transport

Immobilization and release risk of arsenic associated with partitioning and reactivity of iron oxide minerals in paddy soils.
Xiaoxue Ouyang,Jie Ma,Liping Weng,Yali Chen,Rongfei Wei,Junying Zhao,Zong-ling Ren,Hao Peng,Zhongbin Liao,Yongtao Li +9 more
TL;DR: The fractions, immobilization, and release risk of As in eleven soil profiles from the Changzhutan urban agglomeration in China were investigated and it was found that easily reducible Fe (Fe ox1 ) mainly controlled the reductive dissolution of the Fe oxides, which suggest that the reduction dissolution process could potentially release As during the flooded period of rice production.

Unravelling the fate of arsenic during re-oxidation of reduced wetland waters: Experimental constraints and environmental consequences
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the impact of the organic-rich nature of wetland waters on this neoformation, which could instead favour the development of highly mobile As-bearing, organomineral colloids.

Arsenic removal by iron based co-precipitation: Mechanisms in groundwater treatment
Arslan Ahmad
- 01 Jan 2020
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated mechanistic understanding of As removal by co-precipitation with Fe(III)(oxyhydr)oxides under different redox, ion composition and filtration conditions and investigated routes to reduce As in drinking water to very low levels, below 1 µg/L.
Review: Complexation mechanism of organic matter and arsenic on iron-containing minerals
TL;DR: In this article , a review summarizes work in three areas including 1. interaction between different types of organic matter and arsenic, which forms arsenic-organic matter complexes through ligand exchange; 2. oxidation-reduction reaction of organic material and iron-containing minerals, and 3. formation of ternary complexes between organic matter, arsenic and iron ion bridges, and their characterization methods.

The Iron Oxides

- 29 Jul 2003
TL;DR: The food-quality iron oxides are primarily distinguished from technical grades by their comparatively low levels of contamination by other metals; this is achieved by the selection and control of the source of the iron or by the extent of chemical purification during the manufacturing process as discussed by the authors.
