The toroidal field coils of tokamak devices create a field within the torus whose strength varies inversely with distance from the machine center. This field, crossing the current in the TF coils, creates a magnetic pressure on the coil. The pressure produces a net inward centering force, countered by pressure on the wedge face, and a vertical separating force, causing tensile stress across the horizontal mid-plane. In the past these forces have been analyzed by superposition and beam theory. Because of the size and complexity of the PLT machine it was decided to also initiate a finite element analysis of the coil. This paper describes both methods of analysis. (auth)

For output to the WECAN program, the data on line 97 shows only a reverse of format locations for MAT and ITYPE.

The region between any two layers of node points can be identfied as a layer of three-dimensional finite elements.

If h e number of elements in each layer were constant and i f the material number, types and tubles were the same at each layer, then the program ELEMENT would not be used.

For this situation the input to WECAN or ANSYS could be the first layer of finite elements plus one additional card called a second level element generator.

When a coil with its supporting structural cro6s-section is non-uniform or when material properties within the model globul coordinate system vary with coil angular poeition due to winding direction laminations, then the program ELEMENT can be used to avoid hand writing and punching of the finite element cards for every layer of finite elements in the model.

In general the input data to ELEMENT will contuin more information than what is required at each layer, and only the required information is printed to define the elements at a given layer.
