Abstract: Partitioning of circuit netlists in VLSI design is considered. It is shown that the second smallest eigenvalue of a matrix derived from the netlist gives a provably good approximation of the optimal ratio cut partition cost. It is also demonstrated that fast Lanczos-type methods for the sparse symmetric eigenvalue problem are a robust basis for computing heuristic ratio cuts based on the eigenvector of this second eigenvalue. Effective clustering methods are an immediate by-product of the second eigenvector computation and are very successful on the difficult input classes proposed in the CAD literature. The intersection graph representation of the circuit netlist is considered, as a basis for partitioning, a heuristic based on spectral ratio cut partitioning of the netlist intersection graph is proposed. The partitioning heuristics were tested on industry benchmark suites, and the results were good in terms of both solution quality and runtime. Several types of algorithmic speedups and directions for future work are discussed. >

A Time Picking Method Based on Spectral Multimanifold Clustering in Microseismic Data
TL;DR: A new method named spectral multimanifold clustering for picking P-wave arrivals can extract the low-dimensional manifold features from a suitable affinity matrix that demonstrates higher accuracy, better stability, and noise immunity than either the short and long time average method or the akaike information criterion method.

Efficient salient foreground detection for images and video using Fiedler vectors
Federico Perazzi,Olga Sorkine-Hornung,Alexander Sorkine-Hornung +2 more
- 04 May 2015
TL;DR: This paper presents an effective method for detecting potentially salient foreground regions by exploiting discriminative properties of the Fiedler vector and devise an SVM-based classifier that allows us to determine whether an image contains any salient objects at all.

Identifying Functional Modules in Co-Regulatory Networks Through Overlapping Spectral Clustering
TL;DR: This paper proposes a novel computational framework called overlapping spectral clustering (OSC) to systematically detect overlapping CRMs using miRNA/mRNA/TF expression profiles and shows that the CRMs identified by OSC are more functionally enriched.

TL;DR: A new method based on the weighted color patch to compute the weight of edges in an affinity graph to incorporate both color and neighborhood information by representing pixels with color patches is proposed.
Enhancing sentence-level clustering with integrated and interactive frameworks for theme-based summarization
Xiaoyan Cai,Wenjie Li +1 more
TL;DR: Two co-clustering frameworks are developed to enhance sentence-level clustering for theme-based summarization—integrated clustering and interactive clustering—both allowing word and document to play an explicit role in sentence clustering as independent text objects rather than using word or concept as features of a sentence in a document set.

Optimization by Simulated Annealing
TL;DR: There is a deep and useful connection between statistical mechanics and multivariate or combinatorial optimization (finding the minimum of a given function depending on many parameters), and a detailed analogy with annealing in solids provides a framework for optimization of very large and complex systems.
