Family language policy and parental language ideologies among Chinese transnational families in multilingual Luxembourg

Thematic analysis is a poorly demarcated, rarely acknowledged, yet widely used qualitative analytic method within psychology. In this paper, we argue that it offers an accessible and theoretically flexible approach to analysing qualitative data. We outline what thematic analysis is, locating it in relation to other qualitative analytic methods that search for themes or patterns, and in relation to different epistemological and ontological positions. We then provide clear guidelines to those wanting to start thematic analysis, or conduct it in a more deliberate and rigorous way, and consider potential pitfalls in conducting thematic analysis. Finally, we outline the disadvantages and advantages of thematic analysis. We conclude by advocating thematic analysis as a useful and flexible method for qualitative research in and beyond psychology.

Using thematic analysis in psychology

Should qualitative researchers be members of the population they are studying, or should they not? Although this issue has been explored within the context of qualitative research, it has generally been reserved for discussions of observation, field research, and ethnography. The authors expand that discussion and explore membership roles by illustrating the insider status of one author and the outsider status of the other when conducting research with specific parent groups. The strengths and challenges of conducting qualitative research from each membership status are examined. Rather than consider this issue from a dichotomous perspective, the authors explore the notion of the space between that allows researchers to occupy the position of both insider and outsider rather than insider or outsider.

Contrary to most traditional approaches, ideologies are defined here within a multidisciplinary framework that combines a social, cognitive and discursive component. As ‘systems of ideas’, ideologies are sociocognitively defined as shared representations of social groups, and more specifically as the ‘axiomatic’ principles of such representations. As the basis of a social group's self-image, ideologies organize its identity, actions, aims, norms and values, and resources as well as its relations to other social groups. Ideologies are distinct from the sociocognitive basis of broader cultural communities, within which different ideological groups share fundamental beliefs such as their cultural knowledge. Ideologies are expressed and generally reproduced in the social practices of their members, and more particularly acquired, confirmed, changed and perpetuated through discourse. There are two possible interpretations of what the term narrative implies in Labov and Waletzky's original 1967 (this issue; henceforth L&W) framework in terms of how narrative is linked to personal experience in particular and to sense-making in general. The first, more simplistic reading implies that narratives-particularly those of personal experience-are representations of something that on,:e happened and what this past happening meant (or \"now\" means) to the narrator. The second, more indirect reading requires the act of telling-or \"representing\" at a particular occasion in the form of a particular story-to intervene, so to speaK, between the actual experience and the story. It was the first reading of L&W that originally fascinated me and lured me into exploring narratives as a window to people's experiences. However, in the course of having worked with narratives overthelast two decades, I have moved more and more to adopt the second reading. Other contributors to this issue have commented in one or another way on this tension between a traditional, structural approach and a more performance-based, pragmatic approach to narrative and narrative analysis. Whereas the first takes its starting point from what was said (and the way it was said) and works toward why it was said, that is, its meaning, the second focuses more strongly on how it was performed as the main index for what the narrative as an act of instantiation means to the performer. It also should be noted that within this second reading the audience is much more of a factor that impinges on the shape of the narrative and its performance. What actually is being said is one of the many different performance features in what the speaker aims to achieve in the act of narrating.
