Abstract: The information carrier of today's communications, a weak pulse of light, is an intrinsically quantum object. As a consequence, complete information about the pulse cannot be perfectly recorded in a classical memory, even in principle. In the field of quantum information, this has led to the long-standing challenge of how to achieve a high-fidelity transfer of an independently prepared quantum state of light onto an atomic quantum state1,2,3,4. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a protocol for such a quantum memory based on atomic ensembles. Recording of an externally provided quantum state of light onto the atomic quantum memory is achieved with 70 per cent fidelity, significantly higher than the limit for classical recording. Quantum storage of light is achieved in three steps: first, interaction of the input pulse and an entangling field with spin-polarized caesium atoms; second, subsequent measurement of the transmitted light; and third, feedback onto the atoms using a radio-frequency magnetic pulse conditioned on the measurement result. The density of recorded states is 33 per cent higher than the best classical recording of light onto atoms, with a quantum memory lifetime of up to 4 milliseconds.

Entanglement between remote continuous-variable quantum systems: Effects of transmission loss
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of losses on the entanglement created between two separate atomic gases by optical probing and homodyne detection of the transmitted light were studied and compared with the entangling in a pair of light pulses generated by an EPR source.

Quantum memory for images with feedback
TL;DR: In this paper, a spatially multimode scheme of the quantum memory for light is presented that can be considered to be a thin hologram, whose long-lived spin subsystem of a multiatomic ensemble stores image peculiarities such as the multimode superposition and entangled quantum states, which is unattainable for ordinary holography.

TL;DR: In this article, a quantum state fusion (QSFS) is defined as the physical process by which the internal quantum state of two particles (e.g., photons) is transferred into the four-dimensional internal quantum states of a single particle (photon) (Fig. 1).

Effect of temperature on the shape of spatial quasi-periodic oscillations of the refractive index of alkali atoms in an optically dense medium with a closed excitation contour of Δ type
K A Barantsev,A N Litvinov +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a theory of a closed excitation contour (Δ system) of a three-level atom in an optically dense medium is constructed with allowance for temperature, and the spatial quasi-periodic oscillations of the refractive index in the system under study are shown to damp with increasing temperature.

Quantum state transfer and entanglement distribution among distant nodes in a quantum network
TL;DR: In this paper, a scheme to utilize photons for ideal quantum transmission between atoms located at spatially separated nodes of a quantum network was proposed, which employs special laser pulses that excite an atom inside an optical cavity at the sending node so that its state is mapped into a time-symmetric photon wave packet that will enter a cavity at receiving node and be absorbed by an atom there with unit probability.
