TL;DR: Different amounts of paramagnetic ion‐protein complexes may account for part of the differences in T1 of water protons in different tissues, and the longer T1 in cancer cell water may be caused in part by reduced amounts of such complexes.

Abstract: Paramagnetic ions complexed to proteins may lose, retain, or enhance solvent paramagnetic relaxation (SPR) relative to free solution. We measured T1 and T2 of three mouse cancers, their normal counterparts, and six additional tissues. Long T1 of cancers was not caused by necrosis or by different contents of water, fat, or blood. Dissociable (TCA-extractable) and nondissociable (ashed) Mn, Cu, and Fe were measured by AA. Cancers had less Mn, Cu, and Fe than did normal counterparts. All 12 tissues had inverse correlations between T1 and dissociable Mn and Cu. For Mn alone to account for reduced T1, the extent to which SPR of the Mn-protein complexes would be enhanced is by factors of 0.6 to 13, below the maximum observed in Mn-enzymes. Different amounts of paramagnetic ion-protein complexes may account for part of the differences in T1 of water protons in different tissues, and the longer T1 of cancer cell water may be caused in part by reduced amounts Of such complexes. © 1991 Academic Press. TL;DR: Great improvement in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is demonstrated by these NPs, and MRI accurately maps the temporal change profile of the tumor volume after injection of NPs and the tumor treatment process is also closely correlated with the T1 values measured from MRI, demonstrating the capability of providing real‐time feedback to the chemotherapeutic treatment effectiveness.

Magnetic resonance imaging of human melanoma xenografts in vivo: proton spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times versus fractional tumour water content and fraction of necrotic tumour tissue.
TL;DR: In this article, the potential usefulness of 1H-nmr imaging in the prediction of tumour treatment resistance caused by unfavourable microenvironmental conditions, possible correlations between proton spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times (T1 and T2) and physiological parameters of the tumour microenvironment were investigated.

TL;DR: The physicochemical properties of the different phases of water molecules were studied in concentrated solutions of human serum albumin and gammaglobulin by (1)H NMR relaxometry and it was demonstrated that total water differed qualitatively while structured water characteristics changed both quantitatively and qualitatively in the two protein solutions.

Proton Relaxation Times in Paramagnetic Solutions
TL;DR: In this paper, an exchange interaction between the electron spin and proton spin in adjacent water molecules in paramagnetic solutions was proposed, and an explanation was given why T1/T2 for protons is much larger than unity in solutions of these particular ions in high magnetic fields, whereas T1 is about equal to T2 in other solutions or in low fields.
