Abstract: This paper presents a review of heuristic evaluation and recommendations for how to apply the method for information visualization evaluation. Heuristic evaluation is a widely known and popular method within the area of human-computer interaction and the information visualization community now also recognizes its usefulness. However, in this area it is not applied to the same extent. In its original form the method has limitations that need to be considered in order for it to be optimal for information visualization. The aim with this paper is to provide the reader with knowledge about the method and awareness of what issues that call for refined or supplemental actions and resources in order for it to generate as valid and useful results as possible. The paper also discusses the research challenges for future work in how to further improve the method.

A Heuristic Approach to Value-Driven Evaluation of Visualizations
Emily Wall,Meeshu Agnihotri,Laura E. Matzen,Kristin M. Divis,Michael Joseph Haass,Alex Endert,John Stasko +6 more
TL;DR: A heuristic-based evaluation methodology to accompany the value equation for assessing interactive visualizations showed promise, obtaining consistent ratings across the three visualizations and mirroring judgments of the utility of the visualizations by instructors of the course in which they were developed.

Trends and challenges of visual search interfaces in digital libraries and repositories
TL;DR: An in-depth analysis of the criteria associated with searching and navigation methods based on the systematic literature review approach is presented, relevant for researchers in the field of digital library and repository creation in that it may direct them to considerations in designing and implementing visual search interfacesbased on the use of information visualisation.

Heuristic evaluation of user interfaces
Jakob Nielsen,Rolf Molich +1 more
- 01 Mar 1990
TL;DR: Four experiments showed that individual evaluators were mostly quite bad at doing heuristic evaluations and that they only found between 20 and 51% of the usability problems in the interfaces they evaluated.
