Estimating the effects of a studded footwear subsidy program on pedestrian falls among older adults in Gothenburg, Sweden
13
TL;DR: Evidence of a short-term effect on emergency department visits due to slips on snow and ice during the first year of the Gothenburg subsidy program is found, indicating that this type of subsidy program may be an important tool for the prevention of pedestrian falls among older adults during icy weather conditions.

Fall- and collision-related injuries among pedestrians in road traffic environment - A Swedish national register-based study.
TL;DR: In this article , the burden of pedestrian injuries, including pedestrian fall injuries (PFI), compared to other transport-related injuries in Sweden and document their characteristics in terms of demographics, causes, type of injuries, and severity level with a focus on long-term consequences.
FROST: Factors Predicting Orthopaedic Trauma Volumes.
TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify the relationship between weather conditions, time of year, surgical orthopaedic trauma volumes, after-hours surgery, and surgical wait times, and suggest that interventions should aim to decrease weather-related orthopedic trauma and reduce the burden prolonged wait times have on our system.

A (Flexible) Synthetic Control Method for Count Data and Other Nonnegative Outcomes.
TL;DR: In this paper, an alternative way to allow for extrapolation, although ensuring that the estimated counterfactuals remain nonnegative, is proposed. But this method is not suitable for count data.

Enhancing footwear safety for fall prevention in older adults: A comprehensive review of design features.
In-Ju Kim,Fatma Hegazy +1 more
TL;DR: This comprehensive review synthesized and analyzed existing research to bridge knowledge gaps and provide insights into optimal footwear choices for older adults in terms of design features such as fit, fixation, heel height, collar height, slip resistance, and sole/insole hardness.

Evaluation of the design and implementation of municipal ice cleat distribution programs for the prevention of ice-related fall injuries among older adults in Sweden
TL;DR: In this article, the authors performed a process evaluation to identify potential barriers to the success of these programs and analyzed the logic of their design, finding that the main barrier appears to be a lack of scale (i.e., insufficient procurement and distribution of ice cleats), as 90% of all purchased ice cleat were eventually distributed.

Synthetic Control Methods for Comparative Case Studies: Estimating the Effect of California’s Tobacco Control Program
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the applicability of synthetic control methods to comparative case studies and found that, following Proposition 99, tobacco consumption fell markedly in California relative to a comparable synthetic control region, and that by the year 2000 annual per-capita cigarette sales in California were about 26 packs lower than what they would have been in the absence of Proposition 99.
