TL;DR: Two epidermal SM, SM-1 and SM-3, are important precursors of two corresponding Cer in mammalian SC, that is, Cer 2 and Cer 5, but other Cerspecies, including the omega-hydroxy Cer species, do not derive from SM.

Nonhydroxylated 1-O-acylceramides in vernix caseosa
Eva Harazim,Eva Harazim,Vladimír Vrkoslav,Miloš Buděšínský,Petr Harazim,Martin Svoboda,Richard Plavka,Zuzana Bosáková,Josef Cvačka,Josef Cvačka +9 more
TL;DR: Medium-polarity 1-O-ENSs likely contribute to the cohesiveness and to the waterproofing and moisturizing properties of vernix caseosa.

Cutaneous permeability barrier function in signal transducer and activator of transcription 6-deficient mice is superior to that in wild-type mice
TL;DR: The results suggest that STAT6 signaling negatively affects permeability barrier function in vivo, even in the physiological state, and blockade of STAT 6 signaling might be a strategy to augment the permeability Barrier function.

Fatty Acid Synthase and its mRNA Concentrations Are Decreased at Different Times Following Hoechst 33342-induced Apoptosis in BC3H-1 Myocytes
Xinbo Zhang,Frederick L. Kiechle +1 more
TL;DR: The inhibition of fatty acid synthesis induced by 20 microg/ml of Hoechst 33342 is attributed to the degradation of FAS protein by activated caspases rather than by inhibition of Fas enzyme activity or FAS mRNA synthesis.

Identification of Rice Koji Extract Components that Increase β-Glucocerebrosidase Levels in Human Epidermal Keratinocytes
TL;DR: It is found that the consumption of rice miso led to improvements in the moisture content of cheek stratum corneum, skin viscoelasticity, and skin texture, and Rice miso extract was found to increase the mRNA expression and activity of β-glucocerebrosidase (β-GCase), an enzyme involved in ceramide synthesis in the stratum Corneum, in cultures.

A rapid method of total lipid extraction and purification.
E. G. Bligh,W. J. Dyer +1 more
TL;DR: The lipid decomposition studies in frozen fish have led to the development of a simple and rapid method for the extraction and purification of lipids from biological materials that has been applied to fish muscle and may easily be adapted to use with other tissues.

Decreased level of ceramides in stratum corneum of atopic dermatitis : an etiologic factor in atopic dry skin ?
TL;DR: Findings suggest that an insufficiency of ceramides in the stratum corneum is an etiologic factor in atopic dry skin.

Regulation of ceramide production and apoptosis
Richard Kolesnick,Martin Krönke +1 more
TL;DR: The pathways of ceramide generation and the interaction of Ceramide with caspases and other apoptotic signaling cascades are discussed.

Ceramides of pig epidermis: structure determination
TL;DR: Seven distinguishable groups of ceramides have been isolated from pig epidermis and identified and apparently form a large proportion of the intercellular lipid lamellae in the epidermal stratum corneum, which are thought to constitute the barrier to water loss.
