Eight problems for the mirror neuron theory of action understanding in monkeys and humans
TL;DR: There is no evidence from monkey data that directly tests this theory that mirror neurons provide the basis of action understanding, and evidence from humans makes a strong case against the position.

Abstract: The discovery of mirror neurons in macaque frontal cortex has sparked a resurgence of interest in motor/embodied theories of cognition. This critical review examines the evidence in support of one of these theories, namely, that mirror neurons provide the basis of action understanding. It is argued that there is no evidence from monkey data that directly tests this theory, and evidence from humans makes a strong case against the position.

The functional role of the parieto-frontal mirror circuit: interpretations and misinterpretations.
TL;DR: It is concluded that, although there are several mechanisms through which one can understand the behaviour of other individuals, the parieto-frontal mechanism is the only one that allows an individual to understand the action of others 'from the inside' and gives the observer a first-person grasp of the motor goals and intentions of other Individuals.
An integrated theory of language production and comprehension
Martin J. Pickering,Simon Garrod +1 more
TL;DR: It is asserted that producing and understanding are interwoven, and that this interweaving is what enables people to predict themselves and each other.
Neuroscience Needs Behavior: Correcting a Reductionist Bias
John W. Krakauer,Asif A. Ghazanfar,Alex Gomez-Marin,Malcolm A. MacIver,David Poeppel,David Poeppel +5 more
TL;DR: A more pluralistic notion of neuroscience is advocated when it comes to the brain-behavior relationship: behavioral work provides understanding, whereas neural interventions test causality.

Brain regions with mirror properties: a meta-analysis of 125 human fMRI studies.
TL;DR: A core network of human brain regions that possess mirror properties associated with action observation and execution are suggested, with additional areas recruited during tasks that engage non-motor functions, such as auditory, somatosensory and affective components.

Neuropsychological evidence for a strategic control of multiple routes in imitation.
TL;DR: It is argued that the decrease in imitation of meaningful actions, relative to meaningless actions, is caused by a damage of the semantic route, and that the decline in imitation is produced by a breakdown of the direct route.
Human cortex: reflections of mirror neurons.
TL;DR: An fMRI adaptation protocol is applied to the problem and comes up with novel evidence for the existence of movement-selective mirror neurons in human cortex.
The role of mirror neurons in speech perception and action word semantics
TL;DR: It is proposed that motor-related activity during perceptual processes stem from spreading activation in sensory-motor networks that are critical for speech and language production.

TL;DR: Activations in the ventral MPFC may provide the basis for one's “emotional bond” with other persons' emotions, and atypical patterns of activation may underlie disturbed empathy in individuals with ASD.
The orchestration of the sensory-motor systems: Clues from Neuropsychology.
TL;DR: There are already sufficient data from neuropsychology to strongly constrain extant hypotheses about the representation of conceptual knowledge in the brain, and this conclusion compels a reconsideration of the role played by motor planning and/or execution processes in action and object recognition and understanding.
