Abstract: An anticholinergic drug, propantheline bromide, was administered orally and parenterally to Wistar rats for periods of up to 7 months. Gastric acid secretion, measured 48 hr. after discontinuance of the drug, was unchanged in rats that received propantheline orally and increased in those that received the drug parenterally. This increase was associated with greater thickness and surface area of fundic mucosa and reduced weight gain. The development of tolerance to propantheline did not occur.
