Early Life Adversity as a Risk Factor for Fibromyalgia in Later Life
Lucie A. Low,Petra Schweinhardt +1 more
TL;DR: Risks from early life that may increase the occurrence or severity of FM in later life are discussed: pain experience during neonatal life causes long-lasting changes in nociceptive circuitry and increases pain sensitivity in the older organism.

Abstract: The impact of early life events is increasingly becoming apparent, as studies investigate how early childhood can shape long-term physiology and behaviour Fibromyalgia (FM), which is characterised by increased pain sensitivity and a number of affective co-morbidities, has an unclear etiology This paper discusses risk factors from early life that may increase the occurrence or severity of FM in later life: pain experience during neonatal life causes long-lasting changes in nociceptive circuitry and increases pain sensitivity in the older organism; premature birth and related stressor exposure cause lasting changes in stress responsivity; maternal deprivation affects anxiety-like behaviours that may be partially mediated by epigenetic modulation of the genome—all these adult phenotypes are strikingly similar to symptoms displayed by FM sufferers In addition, childhood trauma and exposure to substances of abuse may cause lasting changes in developing neurotransmitter and endocrine circuits that are linked to anxiety and stress responses

The Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI): Establishing Clinically Significant Values for Identifying Central Sensitivity Syndromes in an Outpatient Chronic Pain Sample
Randy Neblett,Howard Cohen,YunHee Choi,Meredith M. Hartzell,Mark R. Williams,Tom G. Mayer,Robert J. Gatchel +6 more
TL;DR: The CSI is a new self-report screening instrument to help identify patients with CSSs, including fibromyalgia, and a normative nonclinical sample to determine a clinically relevant cutoff value is investigated.

Endogenous pain control mechanisms: review and hypothesis
TL;DR: Evidence is presented that this pain suppression system is mediated in part by endogenous opiatelike compounds (endorphins), and a neural model which incorporates the experimental findings is proposed and the clinical implications of the model are discussed.

Psychological impact of fibromyalgia: current perspectives.
TL;DR: Psychological interventions may constitute a beneficial complement to pharmacological treatments in order to improve clinical symptoms and reduce the impact of FMS on health-related quality of life.
Psychological stress in early life as a predisposing factor for the development of chronic pain: Clinical and preclinical evidence and neurobiological mechanisms
TL;DR: Evidence supporting a role for certain key neurobiological substrates, including the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal axis; monoaminergic, opioidergic, endocannabinoid and immune systems; and epigenetic mechanisms in the association between early‐life psychological stress and chronic pain, is provided.

Early procedural pain is associated with regionally-specific alterations in thalamic development in preterm neonates

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that early pain is associated with thalamic volume loss in the territory of the somatosensory thalamus and is accompanied by disruptionsThalamic metabolic growth and thalamocortical pathway maturation, particularly in extremely preterm neonates.

Relationship of childhood abuse and household dysfunction to many of the leading causes of death in adults. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study
Vincent J. Felitti,Robert F. Anda,Dale F. Nordenberg,David F. Williamson,Alison M. Spitz,Valerie J. Edwards,Mary P. Koss,James S. Marks +7 more
TL;DR: For example, this article found a strong relationship between the breadth of exposure to abuse or household dysfunction during childhood and multiple risk factors for several of the leading causes of death in adults.

Stress and the Individual: Mechanisms Leading to Disease
Bruce S. McEwen,Eliot Stellar +1 more
TL;DR: A new formulation of the relationship between stress and the processes leading to disease is presented, emphasizing the cascading relationships between environmental factors and genetic predispositions that lead to large individual differences in susceptibility to stress and, in some cases, to disease.

TL;DR: It is suggested that maternal behavior serves to "program" hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal responses to stress in the offspring.

The prevalence and characteristics of fibromyalgia in the general population
TL;DR: Characteristic features of fibromyalgia--pain threshold and symptoms--are similar in community and clinic populations, but overall severity, pain, and functional disability are more severe in the clinic population.
