Drought and Salt Tolerance in Plants
2.6K
TL;DR: The responses of plants to salt and water stress are described, the regulatory circuits which allow plants to cope with stress are presented, and how the present knowledge can be applied to obtain tolerant plants is discussed.

Abstract: Agricultural productivity worldwide is subject to increasing environmental constraints, particularly to drought and salinity due to their high magnitude of impact and wide distribution. Traditional breeding programs trying to improve abiotic stress tolerance have had some success, but are limited by the multigenic nature of the trait. Tolerant plants such as Craterostigma plantagenium, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, Thellungiella halophila and other hardy plants could be valuable tools to dissect the extreme tolerance nature. In the last decade, Arabidopsis thaliana, a genetic model plant, has been extensively used for unravelling the molecular basis of stress tolerance. Arabidopsis also proved to be extremely important for assessing functions for individual stress-associated genes due to the availability of knock-out mutants and its amenability for genetic transformation. In this review, the responses of plants to salt and water stress are described, the regulatory circuits which allow plants to cope wit...

Improvement of salt tolerance in durum wheat by ascorbic acid application
TL;DR: It was established that the application of vitamin C mitigate to variable extent the adverse effect of salt stress on plant growth, may be due, in part, to increased leaf area, improved chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, enhanced proline accumulation and decreased H.
Physiological and molecular level studies on the toxicity of silver nanoparticles in germinating seedlings of mung bean ( Vigna radiata L.)
TL;DR: Gene expression analysis using real-time polymerase chain reaction showed changes in the relative mRNA expression of CuZn-SOD, CAT, and APX genes indicating the plants’ antioxidative defense responses under silver nanoparticle stress.

Attenuation of Drought Stress in Brassica Seedlings with Exogenous Application of Ca2+ and H2O2
Akram Khan,Yasir Anwar,Md. Mahadi Hasan,Aqib Iqbal,Muhammad Ali,Hesham F. Alharby,Khalid Rehman Hakeem,Mirza Hasanuzzaman +7 more
- 13 May 2017
TL;DR: It was confirmed that the seedlings under drought stress that were supplemented with Ca2+ and H2O2 recovered from water content reduction and chlorosis, and were able to grow normally.

Drought Tolerance in Cotton: Involvement of Non‐enzymatic ROS‐Scavenging Compounds
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared tolerant and sensitive cotton genotypes, grown in the Aegean region of Turkey at normal (field capacity) and limited (1/3 field capacity) water supply, and found that the tolerant genotype was distinguished by a higher content of all polyphenol types, higher proline, carotenoids, and lower MDA level compared with the sensitive genotype.

Comparative physiology of salt and water stress
TL;DR: It is important to avoid treatments that induce cell plasmolysis, and to design experiments that distinguish between tolerance of salt and tolerance of water stress, to understand the processes that give rise toolerance of salt, as distinct from tolerance of osmotic stress.

Salt and drought stress signal transduction in plants
TL;DR: Salt and drought stress signal transduction consists of ionic and osmotic homeostasis signaling pathways, detoxification (i.e., damage control and repair) response pathways, and pathways for growth regulation.
