Drought and Salt Tolerance in Plants
2.6K
TL;DR: The responses of plants to salt and water stress are described, the regulatory circuits which allow plants to cope with stress are presented, and how the present knowledge can be applied to obtain tolerant plants is discussed.

Abstract: Agricultural productivity worldwide is subject to increasing environmental constraints, particularly to drought and salinity due to their high magnitude of impact and wide distribution. Traditional breeding programs trying to improve abiotic stress tolerance have had some success, but are limited by the multigenic nature of the trait. Tolerant plants such as Craterostigma plantagenium, Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, Thellungiella halophila and other hardy plants could be valuable tools to dissect the extreme tolerance nature. In the last decade, Arabidopsis thaliana, a genetic model plant, has been extensively used for unravelling the molecular basis of stress tolerance. Arabidopsis also proved to be extremely important for assessing functions for individual stress-associated genes due to the availability of knock-out mutants and its amenability for genetic transformation. In this review, the responses of plants to salt and water stress are described, the regulatory circuits which allow plants to cope wit...

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that under cold and dehydration conditions, the expression of many genes encoding starch-degrading enzymes, sucrose metabolism enzymes, and sugar alcohol synthases changes dynamically; consequently, many kinds of monosaccharides, disac charides, trisaccharide, tr isaccharided, and Sugar alcohols accumulate in Arabidopsis.

TL;DR: The signaling pathways play an important role between sensing the stress environment and generating an appropriate biochemical and physiological response and leads to differential transcriptional changes making the plant tolerant against the stress.
The combined effect of salinity and heat reveals a specific physiological, biochemical and molecular response in tomato plants.

TL;DR: Interestingly, and in contrast to the expected negative effect of the stress combination on plant growth, the results show that the combination of heat and salinity provides a significant level of protection to tomato plants from the effects of salinity.

Polyamines and their ability to provide environmental stress tolerance to plants
TL;DR: Results seem to indicate that polyamines are an important component in a plant's response to stress and that they play a significant role in counteracting stress.

Leaf proteome alterations in the context of physiological and morphological responses to drought and heat stress in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)
TL;DR: The analysis indicated that de novo protein biosynthesis, protein quality control mediated by chaperones and proteases, and the use of alternative energy resources play important roles in adaptation to heat stress.

Comparative physiology of salt and water stress
TL;DR: It is important to avoid treatments that induce cell plasmolysis, and to design experiments that distinguish between tolerance of salt and tolerance of water stress, to understand the processes that give rise toolerance of salt, as distinct from tolerance of osmotic stress.

Salt and drought stress signal transduction in plants
TL;DR: Salt and drought stress signal transduction consists of ionic and osmotic homeostasis signaling pathways, detoxification (i.e., damage control and repair) response pathways, and pathways for growth regulation.
