Abstract: Systems and methods for asynchronous backup of virtual disks in a distributed storage array are disclosed. An exemplary method may comprise receiving an IO stream at the virtual disks in the distributed storage array, writing data to one or more storage cells of the virtual disks in the distributed storage array, and logging completed writes in a first batch for each of the one or more storage cells. The method also comprises establishing a consistency point in the IO stream, terminating logging to the first batch for each of the one or more storage cells at the consistency point and logging completed writes after the consistency point to a new batch for each of the one or more storage cells. The method also comprises transferring writes logged in the first batch to at least one remote storage so that the at least one remote storage is crash consistent.

Storing a variable number of instances of data objects
Marcus S. Muller,Deepak Raghunath Attarde,Manoj Kumar Vijayan +2 more
- 30 Dec 2009
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe systems and methods for storing a variable number of instances of data objects (e.g., 1, 2, 3, or up to N−1 instances) in secondary storage across a data storage network, where each of the multiple storage devices is configured to store at least a single instance of a data object.

Apparatus and method for a distributed storage global database
Yaniv Romem,Gilad Zlotkin,Ilia Gilderman,Avi Vigder +3 more
- 24 Sep 2007
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a geographically distributed storage system for managing the distribution of data elements wherein requests for given data elements incur a geographic inertia, and the system comprises geographically distributed sites, each comprising a site storage unit for locally storing a portion of a globally coherent distributed database that includes the data elements and a local access point for receiving requests relating to ones of the data items.

Systems and methods for byte-level or quasi byte-level single instancing
Michael F. Klose
- 27 Nov 2009
TL;DR: In this paper, a file is divided into multiple blocks, each of which includes multiple bytes, and then a rolling hash of the file is generated for each block, which is then used to reduce the amount of data being stored.

- 19 Jan 1999
TL;DR: In this article, a peer-to-peer backup storage system automatically switches from a primary storage site to a mirrored backup site in response to a primary site failure, where the secondary site then honors any existing host initiated reservation of primary storage.
