Abstract: The main goal of this research was to develop a framework for understanding the mechanisms that operate and govern the mechanical behavior of the interlayer bond between the layers of asphalt pavements, mainly the top asphalt layer and the one immediately underneath it. One of the basic requirements for developing the framework was the understanding and determination of the main mechanisms that govern the interlayer bond. Therefore, an extensive literature review followed by a comprehensive experimental modeling was carried out by using an idealized model material. Furthermore, the effects of the critical parameters were determined and quantified. This was achieved by a parametric experimental study which investigated the effect of moisture, temperature and the gap width between the shearing rings on the bond strength. After understanding the mechanisms and the effects of the critical parameters, a model using artificial neural network technique was evaluated and the contributing variables and their influences on the interlayer bond were predicted.

Development of artificial neural network and multiple linear regression models in the prediction process of the hot mix asphalt properties
Ivica Androjić,Ivan Marović +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a development of artificial neural network and multiple linear regression models in the prediction process of predetermined dependent variables air void and soluble binder content is presented to decrease the amount of such tests, and compared results of the prediction models on an independent dataset and analyzed them through the boundary conditions of technical regulations and the standard EN 13108-21.
The influence of age on interlayer shear properties
TL;DR: In this article, the influence of age on the interlayer bonding properties of two-layered asphalt pavements has been investigated and it was found that the positive effect of ageing is greater when a tack coat is used.

Effects of Continuous Laydown and Compaction on Interlayer Shear Bonding of Asphalt Layers
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the mechanical and interlayer shear performance of continuous and discontinuous paving asphalt mixtures and found that the performance of the continuous asphalt pavement is better than that of the discontinuous asphalt pavement.
