Abstract: Dynamic near-infrared optical tomographic measurement instrumentation capable of simultaneous bilateral breast imaging, having a capability of four source wavelengths and 32 source–detector fibers for each breast, is described. The system records dynamic optical data simultaneously from both breasts, while verifying proper optical fiber contact with the tissue through implementation of automatic schemes for evaluating data integrity. Factors influencing system complexity and performance are discussed, and experimental measurements are provided to demonstrate the repeatability of the instrumentation. Considerations in experimental design are presented, as well as techniques for avoiding undesirable measurement artifacts, given the high sensitivity and dynamic range (1:109) of the system. We present exemplary clinical results comparing the measured physiologic response of a healthy individual and of a subject with breast cancer to a Valsalva maneuver.

Diffuse optics for tissue monitoring and tomography
TL;DR: The theoretical basis for near-infrared or diffuse optical spectroscopy (NIRS or DOS) is developed, and the basic elements of diffuse optical tomography (DOT) are outlined.

TL;DR: This is the first demonstration of functional NIRS brain imaging during an outdoor activity in a real life situation in humans and provides quantitative guidelines for taking condition-dependent signal quality into account to allow the comparison of data across various levels of physical exercise.

TL;DR: Whole-head optical measurements, in addition to providing maps of multiple brain regions' responses to brain activation, will enable better understandings of the physiological signals, ultimately leading to better signal processing algorithms to distinguish physiological signal clutter from brain activation signals.
Recent applications of near-infrared spectroscopy in cancer diagnosis and therapy
TL;DR: An overview on the importance of the NIRS tools in cancer pathology is provided, and in the near future it is envisaged to play a crucial role in cancer diagnosis, treatment decisions, and defining therapeutic drug levels.

TL;DR: The observations suggest the combination of DCS and DOS enhances treatment monitoring compared to either technique alone, and the hybrid approach also enables construction of indices reflecting tissue metabolic rate of oxygen, which may provide new insights about therapy mechanisms.

Estimation of optical pathlength through tissue from direct time of flight measurement
TL;DR: Monte Carlo modelling of light pulses in tissue has shown that the mean value of the time dispersed light pulse correlates with the pathlength used in quantitative spectroscopic calculations, and this result has been verified in a phantom material.

Optical tomographic imaging of dynamic features of dense-scattering media
TL;DR: In this paper, a self-referencing scheme was proposed to identify new features associated with vascular dynamics from the analysis of time-series image data, based on the observation that analysis of such data can produce high contrast images that reveal features that are mainly obscured in individual image frames or in time-averaged image data.
