Abstract: Fundamental principles of material science are closely integrated with everyday dental practice in the newly revised edition of this classic textbook. Written in a practical, straightforward manner with the student practitioner in mind, this book presents the essential knowledge of material structure and properties. A glossary of terms and discussion questions are included with each chapter to help students focus on the concepts they will need as practicing dentists. Promoting problem-based learning through the use of real-life clinical scenarios, the authors show how to apply the framework of material science to restorative treatment plans. This didactic combination will enable students, technicians, and clinicians not only to select appropriate materials for various clinical situations, but to handle them correctly for optimum clinical performance.

TL;DR: The physicochemical and thermo-adsorptive surface properties of commercially available mouthrinses significantly impact the adhesion and wettability of a model poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer. The surface tension, surface activity, partitioning coefficient, and critical micellar concentration influence the surface wettability and adhesion of the polymer. The mouthrinse effect results in changes in the contact angle hysteresis, film pressure, surface free energy, and work of adhesion. The variations in surface excess ratio suggest the formation of multilayered structures of surfactants in the mouthrinse mixtures.

Surface detail reproduction under simulated pulpal pressure: a 3-dimensional optical profilometer and scanning electron microscopy evaluation.
TL;DR: The hydrophobic and hydrophilic impression materials tested showed similar ability to reproduce detail under simulated pulpal pressure, and Polyurethane-based cast material successfully reproduced the surface texture.
