TL;DR: The results suggest a dysfunction in the DHEA secretion in patients with MS, similar to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis system.

Abstract: Basic and clinical research suggest that disturbed neuroendocrine function may be involved in the pathogenesis and course of autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS). Dehydroepiandrostero

Neuroendocrine function and chronic inflammatory stress.
TL;DR: Recent studies have revealed that a single exposure to endotoxin can confer protection to subsequent development of inflammation in an arthritis model in both neonatal and adult rats.

A synthetic androstene derivative and a natural androstene metabolite inhibit relapsing-remitting EAE.

TL;DR: Evaluating the suppressive effects of fluasterone (HE2500), a synthetic androstene derivative, and androstenetriol (HE2200), a natural androstane hormone on EAE suggests that HE2500 and/or HE2200 limit the production of autoimmune Th1 associated cytokines, and ultimately may be beneficial for patients with MS or other autoimmune diseases.

Replacement therapy with DHEA plus corticosteroids in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases--substitutes of adrenal and sex hormones.
TL;DR: A dysfunction of the hypothalamic – pituitary – adrenal (HPA) axis was found in animal models of chronic inflammatory diseases, and the defect was located in more central portions of the HPA axis.

Neuroendocrinology of autoimmunity.
TL;DR: Continuing investigations suggest that the hypothesis linking susceptibility to autoimmune disease and a hyporesponsive HPA axis is somewhat simplistic, and the link of behavioral differences to alterations in neurotransmitter changes associated with disease is intriguing and opens new avenues of research.

Hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis dysregulation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis after the dexamethasone/corticotrophin releasing factor test.
TL;DR: Data reveal that three of the seven patients with RA were able to escape from dexamethasone suppression and mount a cortisol response to CRF challenge, suggesting that there may be a subpopulation of patients with rheumatoid arthritis who have impaired glucocorticoid feedback.

Rating neurologic impairment in multiple sclerosis An expanded disability status scale (EDSS)
TL;DR: A new Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) is presented, with each of the former steps (1,2,3 … 9) now divided into two (1.0, 1.5, 2.0 … 9).

Development of a Rating Scale for Primary Depressive Illness
TL;DR: This is an account of further work on a rating scale for depressive states, including a detailed discussion on the general problems of comparing successive samples from a ‘population’, the meaning of factor scores, and the other results obtained.

Immune-neuro-endocrine interactions: facts and hypotheses.
Hugo O. Besedovsky,A del Rey +1 more
TL;DR: At the beginning of the second half of the 20th century, most efforts were directed at understanding the molecular and cellular basis of the immune response and the mechanisms of acquisition of immunologic responses.

The combined dexamethasone/CRH test: A refined laboratory test for psychiatric disorders
TL;DR: In this article, the DEX/CRH test was used to assess hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-system (HPA) alteration in patients with psychiatric disorders.
