A group of registers may be marked as " clear " or in an alternative embodiment as " locked," " clear " indicating that a register within the group will act as though cleared although actual clearance will not take place until a reference to that register is made and " locked " indicating that writing into that register is prevented. A magnetic core store comprises seven planes of cores together with, in a first embodiment, a clear plane, corresponding cores from each plane forming a register storing a single seven-bit character plus an indication of the status of the register. If the bit stored in the clear plane is zero, the register is clear. A register of the store is selected by coincident half-currents, appropriate lines being selected by X and Y core matrix switches 50, 48 (Fig. 1). A core of the switches is selected by biasing all except one row of the matrix to positive saturation, then applying a negative pulse to a selected column of such strength as to switch only the unbiased core. The read sequence is as follows: the address in register 24 is decoded and appropriate X and Y lines marked to read a selector register into an out register 56 comprising seven flip-flops, one for each bit, a status trigger 58 being set according to the value of the bit stored in the clear plane; the 1-output of the status trigger is one input to seven AND circuits 60 of which the other inputs are the 1-output of each of the out register flipflops. The outputs of the AND circuits are sent to the computer and to inverters 64 to operate at an appropriate time in the cycle inhibit drivers 70 so that the contents of the register are re-written (to all cores of the register are applied positive coincident pulses but for those cores storing zero an inhibit winding is energized counteracting the effect of the positive pulses). It follows that if the clear plane core stores zero none of the AND units 60 produce a positive output and, whatever the actual contents of the register, it is read as empty. Further, on the write portion of the cycle, unless new information is to be written in, the register is actually cleared since all the inhibit drivers 70 are operated while the clear plans core is set to store one. Selected blocks of the clear plane are set at zero by a control unit which in response to a three-digit binary input actuates drivers setting the cores in any one of four blocks, or in one of two sets of two or three blocks (Fig. 7, not shown). The second embodiment which is very similar provides that writing into a register is not possible once a core in a " lock " plane corresponding to that register has been set to one. The core sets a status trigger which controls gates through which the incoming information must pass (Fig. 8 not shown). An alarm is given and the core reset to one.
