Abstract: Our group analyzed a multi-institutional data set to address the question of how the outcomes of surgery for prostate cancer are affected by surgeon-specific factors. The cohort consists of 9076 patients treated by open radical prostatectomy at one of four US academic institutions 1987 - 2003. The primary analyses focused on 7765 patients without neoadjuvant therapy. The most well-known finding is that of a surgical "learning curve", with rates of prostate cancer cure strongly dependent on surgeon experience. In this "data note", we provide the raw data set, as well as well-annotated programming code for the main analyses. Data include markers of cancer severity (stage, grade and prostate-specific antigen level), cancer outcome, and surgeon variables such as training and experience.

TL;DR: Three main actions are warranted: academic institutions and funders should reward investigators who fully disseminate their research protocols, reports, and participant-level datasets, and standards for the content of protocols and full study reports should be rigorously developed and adopted for all types of health research.

A call for BMC Research Notes contributions promoting best practice in data standardization, sharing and publication.
TL;DR: BMC Research Notes aims to ensure that data files underlying published articles are made available in standard, reusable formats, and the journal is calling for contributions from the scientific community to achieve this goal as mentioned in this paper.

TL;DR: RARP does not require previous experience in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, but the learning curve is not short to achieve the plateau, and progressive postoperative improvement and maintenance of continence and sexual potency until the last patient was operated in this sample.

TL;DR: In men undergoing prostatectomy, the rates of postoperative and late urinary complications are significantly reduced if the procedure is performed in a high-volume hospital and by a surgeon who performs a high number of such procedures.

Empirical Study of Data Sharing by Authors Publishing in PLoS Journals
TL;DR: It is suggested that journal policies requiring data sharing do not lead to authors making their data sets available to independent investigators, as only one of ten raw data sets requested was received.

TL;DR: A minimum standard for de-identifying datasets for the purposes of publication in a peer-reviewed biomedical journal, or sharing with other researchers is proposed, with an emphasis on randomised controlled trials.

TL;DR: Excellent rates of cancer control for patients with organ-confined disease treated by the most experienced surgeons suggest that the primary reason such patients recur is inadequate surgical technique.
