Abstract: Cytokines are small secreted proteins released by cells have a specific effect on the interactions and communications between cells. Cytokine is a general name; other names include lymphokine (cytokines made by lymphocytes), monokine (cytokines made by monocytes), chemokine (cytokines with chemotactic activities), and interleukin (cytokines made by one leukocyte and acting on other leukocytes). Cytokines may act on the cells that secrete them (autocrine action), on nearby cells (paracrine action), or in some instances on distant cells (endocrine action). There are both pro-inflammatory cytokines and anti-inflammatory cytokines. There is significant evidence showing that certain cytokines/chemokines are involved in not only the initiation but also the persistence of pathologic pain by directly activating nociceptive sensory neurons. Certain inflammatory cytokines are also involved in nerve-injury/inflammation-induced central sensitization, and are related to the development of contralateral hyperalgesia/allodynia. The discussion presented in this chapter describes several key pro-inflammatory cytokines/chemokines and anti-inflammatory cytokines, their relation with pathological pain in animals and human patients, and possible underlying mechanisms.

Short Chain Fatty Acids Taken at Time of Thrombectomy in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients Are Independent of Stroke Severity But Associated With Inflammatory Markers and Worse Symptoms at Discharge
N. Lynn Henry,Jacqueline A. Frank,Christopher J. McLouth,Amanda L Trout,Andrew D. Morris,Jianzhong Chen,Ann M. Stowe,Justin F. Fraser,Keith R. Pennypacker +8 more
TL;DR: Higher levels of SCFAs at the time of stroke are associated with increased markers of inflammation, less recovery from admission to discharge, and worse symptom burden at discharge, but plasma SCFA concentrations taken at time of Stroke are not associated with stroke severity at presentation.
Anti-inflammatory properties of the ethanol extract from Clerodendrum cyrtophyllum Turcz based on in vitro and in vivo studies.
Thu Hang Nguyen,Amandine Nachtergael,Thi Mai Nguyen,Valérie Cornet,Pierre Duez,Marc Muller,Duong Thi Ly Huong,Patrick Kestemont +7 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the raw ethanol extract from C. cyrtophyllum Turcz leaves presents potent anti-inflammatory activities and may be useful for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases.

Modelling within-host macrophage dynamics in influenza virus infection.
TL;DR: A novel mathematical model that serves as a framework to study the complex dynamics of virus-macrophage interactions and provides a mechanistic explanation for existing experimental observations is developed, contributing to an enhanced understanding of the role of macrophages in influenza viral infection.

TL;DR: It is shown that minocycline, an approved tetracycline derivative that inhibits microglial activation independently of its antimicrobial properties, mitigates both the demise of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons and the formation of nitrotyrosine produced by MPTP.

Nitric oxide (NO) and nociceptive processing in the spinal cord.
Stephen T. Meller,G.F. Gebhart +1 more
TL;DR: These reports suggest that the reflex withdrawal response to noxious heat is not mediated through activation of NMDA receptors and subsequent production of NO and cGMP, but that the acute NMDA-produced facilitation of thermal reflexes is NMDA-, NO- andcGMP-mediated.

The pivotal role of tumour necrosis factor α in the development of inflammatory hyperalgesia
TL;DR: Results show that TNFα has an early and crucial role in the development of inflammatory hyperaglesia and the finding that the production of these cytokines is inhibited by steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs provides a mechanism of action for these drugs in the treatment ofinflammatory hyperalgesia.

Beyond Neurons: Evidence That Immune and Glial Cells Contribute to Pathological Pain States
Linda R. Watkins,Steven F. Maier +1 more
TL;DR: All nerves and neurons regardless of modality or function are likely affected by immune and glial activation in the ways described for pain, and proinflammatory cytokines appear to be of special importance in the creation of peripheral nerve and neuronal hyperexcitability.
