TL;DR: In this paper, correction factors for the oxygen transfer coefficient (α) and the concentration of oxygen at saturation (β) were determined for waters from 43 fish-culture systems, and a table of factors for estimating aerator performance under pond conditions was developed.

Abstract: Correction factors for the oxygen-transfer coefficient (α) and correction factors for the concentration of oxygen at saturation (β) were determined for waters from 43 fish-culture systems. Values for α ranged from 0.66 to 1.07 (mean = 0.94), and β factors ranged from 0.92 to 1.00 (mean = 0.98). The magnitudes of α and β factors were not correlated with turbidity, specific conductance, chemical oxygen demand, or chlorophyll-α concentration. A table of factors for estimating aerator performance under pond conditions was developed.

Pond water aeration systems
TL;DR: The purpose of this article is to summarize the ‘state of the art’ of mechanical aeration of aquaculture ponds and identify the most common and usually the most effective means of increasing dissolved oxygen concentrations in ponds.

Water Quality Management in Aquaculture
Claude E. Boyd,V.K. Pillai +1 more
- 01 Jan 1985
TL;DR: Water quality includes all physical, chemical and biological factors that influence the beneficial use of water as discussed by the authors and is defined as "any characteristic of water that affects the survival, reproduction, growth, production, or management of fishes in any way".

Dissolved Oxygen and Aeration in Ictalurid Catfish Aquaculture
TL;DR: Feed-based production of ictalurid catfish in ponds is the largest aquaculture sector in the USA, and when measurements suggest that nighttime dissolved oxygen concentration will be unacceptably low, tractor-powered emergency aerators must be operated to supplement dedicated aeration.

Design and peroormance of paddle wheel aerators
Taufik Ahmad,Claude E. Boyd +1 more
TL;DR: An apparatus was constructed for testing the influence of paddle shape and depth and paddle wheel speed and diameter on oxygen transfer characteristics of electric paddle wheel aerators as discussed by the authors, and the results showed that the effect of the shape of the paddle wheel and depth on the oxygen transfer rate increased with increasing depth and speed.

The Chemical Oxygen Demand of Waters and Biological Materials from Ponds
TL;DR: The rate of oxygen consumption by organisms in pond waters, as measured by a dark bottle technique for a 24-hour period, increased with increasing chemical oxygen demand (COD) as discussed by the authors.
