TL;DR: The definition and analysis of basic rationality is defined; various assumptions about independence are considered; and the advantages of extending the definition of rationality from individual actions to decision procedures are demonstrated.

Abstract: Intelligent agents must be able to interact even without the benefit of communication. In this paper we examine various constraints on the actions of agents in such situations and discuss the effects of these constraints on their derived utility. In particular, we define and analyze basic rationality; we consider various assumptions about independence; and we demonstrate the advantages of extending the definition of rationality from individual actions to decision procedures.

The Evolution of Cooperation.
Terry Connolly,Robert Axelrod +1 more
TL;DR: A model is developed based on the concept of an evolutionarily stable strategy in the context of the Prisoner's Dilemma game to show how cooperation based on reciprocity can get started in an asocial world, can thrive while interacting with a wide range of other strategies, and can resist invasion once fully established.

Reasons and Persons
Joseph Margolis,Derek Parfit +1 more
Abstract: This book challenges, with several powerful arguments, some of our deepest beliefs about rationality, morality, and personal identity. The author claims that we have a false view of our own nature; that it is often rational to act against our own best interests; that most of us have moral views that are directly self-defeating; and that, when we consider future generations the conclusions will often be disturbing. He concludes that moral non-religious moral philosophy is a young subject, with a promising but unpredictable future.

A Formal Theory of Knowledge and Action
Robert C. Moore
- 01 Feb 1984
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a theory of action in which these problems are taken into account, showing how to formalize both the knowledge prerequisites of action and the effects of action on knowledge.
