TL;DR: A cultured system that reproduces the main characteristics of FAE and M cells was established by cultivation of PP lymphocytes with the differentiated human intestinal cell line Caco-2, inducing reorganization of the brush border and a temperature-dependent transport of particles and Vibrio cholerae.

Abstract: The epithelium that lines the gut is impermeable to macromolecules and microorganisms, except in Peyer's patches (PPs), where the lymphoid follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) contains M cells that transport antigens and microorganisms. A cultured system that reproduces the main characteristics of FAE and M cells was established by cultivation of PP lymphocytes with the differentiated human intestinal cell line Caco-2. Lymphocytes settled into the epithelial monolayer, inducing reorganization of the brush border and a temperature-dependent transport of particles and Vibrio cholerae. This model system could prove useful for intestinal physiology, vaccine research, and drug delivery studies.

Antibody Is Required for Protection against Virulent but Not Attenuated Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that costimulation via the surface molecule CD28, but not antibody production by B cells, is required for clearance of attenuatedaroA Salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium.

TL;DR: A new, simplified in vitro model of the human M-cell is established to enable controlled studies of M- cell development and function in vitro.
Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis invades through M cells and enterocytes across ileal and jejunal mucosa of lambs
TL;DR: An in vivo multiple-intestinal loop model in lambs developed to investigate the type of cells involved in the bacterial uptake across the intestinal mucosa, the efficiency of bacterial uptake in different segments of the small intestine and the ability of different strains of Map to invade the various segments ofThe small intestine revealed that Map invaded through M cells and the enterocytes and bacterial translocation across M cells was greater than the enterocyte.

TL;DR: It is found that transvascular transport of rAAV9 in the heart is a capacity-limited slow process and occurs in the absence of caveolin-1, the major component of caveolae that mediate endothelial transcytosis and provides important implications in AAV capsid engineering to create new r AAV variants with more desirable properties.

TL;DR: Efficient, temperature-dependent PV transcytosis in Caco-2 cell monolayers containing M-like cells is demonstrated, consistent with M cells serving as gateways allowing PV access to the basal face of enterocytes, the underlying immune follicle cells, and PV transport toward mesenteric lymph nodes.

Expression and intracellular transport of microvillus membrane hydrolases in human intestinal epithelial cells.
TL;DR: Results suggest that the major disaccharidases share a common biosynthetic mechanism that differs from that for peptidases, and indicate that the transport of microvillus membrane proteins to and through the Golgi apparatus is a selective process that may be mediated by transport receptors.
M cell transport of Vibrio cholerae from the intestinal lumen into Peyer's patches: a mechanism for antigen sampling and for microbial transepithelial migration.
TL;DR: M cells convey viable enteric microbes, including V. cholerae that are not otherwise invasive, into intestinal lymphoid tissue, where mucosal immune responses are initiated andptake and transport by M cells may also assist certain pathogenic bacteria in traversing the mucosal barrier and initiating systemic infection.

Uptake and translocation of fluorescent latex particles by rabbit Peyer's patch follicle epithelium: a quantitative model for M cell uptake.
TL;DR: A quantitative, light microscopic morphometric model for uptake of particulates by Peyer's patch M cells was developed and revealed a considerably greater uptake efficiency of polystyrene microspheres in comparison to other biological particles.
