Controlling for endogeneity with instrumental variables in strategic management research

Abstract: This article offers a framework to understand how endogeneity arises and how to control for it with instrumental variables to estimate causal relations with observational data. It builds on the state-of-the-art research in applied and theoretical econometrics to highlight the importance of endogeneity and review the methods that can be used to address it with instrumental variables. The article also discusses when the Heckman two-step procedure can be used, as well as the tests, methods and assumptions that researchers should check when using instrumental variables. To ease implementation of the instrumental variables techniques, the author offers the STATA commands of the exposed tests and methods. Further, an empirical example is provided along with the utilized STATA codes. In the end, this article serves as a`toolkit' allowing scholars not only to understand whether endogeneity is present in their empirical setting, but also to assess the empirical validity of their work when using instrumental variables.

Experience Matters? The Impact of Prior CEO Experience on Firm Performance
Monika Hamori,Burak Koyuncu +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the relationship between experience in the CEO position of a different firm and the post-succession financial performance of the firm that they currently lead was investigated. And the results showed that experience is negatively related to firm performance.
The Effect of Corruption on FDI and Its Modes of Entry
TL;DR: In this article, the impact of corruption on foreign direct investment and its two major modes of entry: greenfield investment and cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) is investigated.
Will rivals enter or wait outside when faced with litigation risk? Patent litigation in complex product industries and international market entry:
Ergun Onoz,Claudio Giachetti +1 more
TL;DR: A spiral of patent infringement litigation among rival firms is a phenomenon often observed in complex product industries, where products comprise numerous separately patentable elements as discussed by the authors, and theoretic models have been used to predict patent infringement in complex products.
Hybrid Strategies, Dysfunctional Competition, and New Venture Performance in Transition Economies
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that the advantages of a hybrid strategy are contingent on the perception of a specific condition: dysfunctional competition, and they show that political networking indeed amplifies the positive influence of market-orientation strategies on performance, but only in contexts where dysfunctional competition is perceived to be low.
Bank Diversification and Overall Financial Strength: International Evidence
TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of diversification in terms of income, earning assets, and on-and off-balance-sheet activities on bank financial strength was investigated using an international sample of commercial banks, and the results reveal that income and earning assets diversification can mitigate the adverse effect of the financial crisis on bank's financial strength.

Some Tests of Specification for Panel Data: Monte Carlo Evidence and an Application to Employment Equations.
Manuel Arellano,Stephen Bond +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator optimally exploits all the linear moment restrictions that follow from the assumption of no serial correlation in the errors, in an equation which contains individual effects, lagged dependent variables and no strictly exogenous variables.

Sample Selection Bias as a Specification Error
TL;DR: In this article, the bias that results from using non-randomly selected samples to estimate behavioral relationships as an ordinary specification error or "omitted variables" bias is discussed, and the asymptotic distribution of the estimator is derived.

Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data
Jeffrey M. Wooldridge
- 01 Jan 2001
TL;DR: This is the essential companion to Jeffrey Wooldridge's widely-used graduate text Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data (MIT Press, 2001).
A Heteroskedasticity-Consistent Covariance Matrix Estimator and a Direct Test for Heteroskedasticity
TL;DR: In this article, a parameter covariance matrix estimator which is consistent even when the disturbances of a linear regression model are heteroskedastic is presented, which does not depend on a formal model of the structure of the heteroSkewedness.

Separation of ownership and control
Eugene F. Fama,Michael C. Jensen +1 more
TL;DR: The authors argue that the separation of decision and risk-bearing functions observed in large corporations is common to other organizations such as large professional partnerships, financial mutuals, and nonprofits. But they do not consider the role of decision agents in these organizations.
