Abstract: This article offers a framework to understand how endogeneity arises and how to control for it with instrumental variables to estimate causal relations with observational data. It builds on the state-of-the-art research in applied and theoretical econometrics to highlight the importance of endogeneity and review the methods that can be used to address it with instrumental variables. The article also discusses when the Heckman two-step procedure can be used, as well as the tests, methods and assumptions that researchers should check when using instrumental variables. To ease implementation of the instrumental variables techniques, the author offers the STATA commands of the exposed tests and methods. Further, an empirical example is provided along with the utilized STATA codes. In the end, this article serves as a`toolkit' allowing scholars not only to understand whether endogeneity is present in their empirical setting, but also to assess the empirical validity of their work when using instrumental variables.

It’s a Family Affair: A Case for Consistency in Family Foundation Giving and Family Firm Community CSR Activity
TL;DR: In this article , the authors show a positive relationship between family foundation giving and firm community CSR activity, showing that it is weaker for firms that do not share the family's name and stronger for those firms with family leaders who also lead their families' foundations.

Can corporate philanthropy be driven from the bottom to the top? Evidence from China
TL;DR: In this paper, the Heckman two-stage selection model was applied to examine the effect of employees' donations on corporate philanthropy and the conditions under which this effect occurs, and the results showed that employees’ donations are positively associated with Corporate philanthropy.

Advancing Research Methods in Crisis Management
Farhan Iqbal,Jonathan Bundy,Michael D. Pfarrer +2 more
- 20 Sep 2021
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a behavioral process model of crisis management comprised of three stages: interpretations, responses, and outcomes, and identify areas of opportunity and provide methodological recommendations that enhance our understanding of crises and crisis management.

Acqui‐hires: Redeployment and retention of human capital post‐acquisition
Beril Boyacıoğlu,Mahmut N. Özdemir,Samina Karim +2 more
TL;DR: Acqui‐hires involve the redeployment and retention of human capital post‐acquisition. The integration of acqui‐hired teams depends on the type of know‐how being acquired.

A dynamic analysis of wine pricing in Argentina
Juan M.C. Larrosa,Emiliano Martin Gutierrez,Gonzalo R. Ramírez Muñoz de Toro,Juan I. Uriarte +3 more
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors investigate micro determinants for dynamic wine pricing in Argentina and test whether attributes and time affect the price rate of change, with clear seasonal patterns and quality segmentation affecting pricing: wines made from determined grapes and specific wineries show divergent pricing.

Some Tests of Specification for Panel Data: Monte Carlo Evidence and an Application to Employment Equations.
Manuel Arellano,Stephen Bond +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator optimally exploits all the linear moment restrictions that follow from the assumption of no serial correlation in the errors, in an equation which contains individual effects, lagged dependent variables and no strictly exogenous variables.

Sample Selection Bias as a Specification Error
TL;DR: In this article, the bias that results from using non-randomly selected samples to estimate behavioral relationships as an ordinary specification error or "omitted variables" bias is discussed, and the asymptotic distribution of the estimator is derived.

A Heteroskedasticity-Consistent Covariance Matrix Estimator and a Direct Test for Heteroskedasticity
TL;DR: In this article, a parameter covariance matrix estimator which is consistent even when the disturbances of a linear regression model are heteroskedastic is presented, which does not depend on a formal model of the structure of the heteroSkewedness.

Separation of ownership and control
Eugene F. Fama,Michael C. Jensen +1 more
TL;DR: The authors argue that the separation of decision and risk-bearing functions observed in large corporations is common to other organizations such as large professional partnerships, financial mutuals, and nonprofits. But they do not consider the role of decision agents in these organizations.
