Controlling for endogeneity with instrumental variables in strategic management research
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a framework to understand how endogeneity arises and how to control for it with instrumental variables to estimate causal relations with observational data, using the Heckman two-step procedure and the STATA commands of the exposed tests and methods.

Abstract: This article offers a framework to understand how endogeneity arises and how to control for it with instrumental variables to estimate causal relations with observational data. It builds on the state-of-the-art research in applied and theoretical econometrics to highlight the importance of endogeneity and review the methods that can be used to address it with instrumental variables. The article also discusses when the Heckman two-step procedure can be used, as well as the tests, methods and assumptions that researchers should check when using instrumental variables. To ease implementation of the instrumental variables techniques, the author offers the STATA commands of the exposed tests and methods. Further, an empirical example is provided along with the utilized STATA codes. In the end, this article serves as a`toolkit' allowing scholars not only to understand whether endogeneity is present in their empirical setting, but also to assess the empirical validity of their work when using instrumental variables.

Contractual Complexity of R&D Alliances - A Two-Dimensional Analysis of the Determinants of Contractual Complexity
John Hagedoorn,Geerte G. Hesen +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a conceptual model of complexity that incorporates both dimensions of contractual complexity through which they investigate to what extent firm characteristics, transactional characteristics and the organizational routines of firms affect contractual complexity.

Do Flexibility and Chaining Really Help? An Empirical Analysis of Automotive Plant Networks
TL;DR: Simulation shows that well-established long-chain configurations cease to perform better than sparser configurations when changeover losses are accounted for, indicating that firms can be better-off by adopting a sparser structure than chaining to improve productivity.

HIV/AIDS pandemic and agricultural production in Cameroon
TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess factors that affect the prevalence of HIV and explore the influence of HIV/AIDS on agricultural production in Cameroon using two-stage least squares regression method.
Adoption of modern irrigation technologies in the presence of water theft and corruption: evidence from public irrigated areas in Medjez-el-Bab
Wided Mattoussi,F. Mattoussi +1 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors used a theoretical model of centralized management to show that water theft is more likely when water prices and monitoring costs are high and punishment levels are weak, though only within the range of low to medium prices.

Some Tests of Specification for Panel Data: Monte Carlo Evidence and an Application to Employment Equations.
Manuel Arellano,Stephen Bond +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator optimally exploits all the linear moment restrictions that follow from the assumption of no serial correlation in the errors, in an equation which contains individual effects, lagged dependent variables and no strictly exogenous variables.

Sample Selection Bias as a Specification Error
TL;DR: In this article, the bias that results from using non-randomly selected samples to estimate behavioral relationships as an ordinary specification error or "omitted variables" bias is discussed, and the asymptotic distribution of the estimator is derived.

A Heteroskedasticity-Consistent Covariance Matrix Estimator and a Direct Test for Heteroskedasticity
TL;DR: In this article, a parameter covariance matrix estimator which is consistent even when the disturbances of a linear regression model are heteroskedastic is presented, which does not depend on a formal model of the structure of the heteroSkewedness.

Separation of ownership and control
Eugene F. Fama,Michael C. Jensen +1 more
TL;DR: The authors argue that the separation of decision and risk-bearing functions observed in large corporations is common to other organizations such as large professional partnerships, financial mutuals, and nonprofits. But they do not consider the role of decision agents in these organizations.
