Unpaid extinction debts for endemic plants and invertebrates as a legacy of habitat loss on oceanic islands
Rüdiger Otto,Víctor Garzón-Machado,Marcelino del Arco,Silvia Fernández-Lugo,Lea de Nascimento,Pedro Oromí,Marcos Báez,Miguel Ibáñez,María R. Alonso,José María Fernández-Palacios +9 more
TL;DR: The SAR approach suggests that a considerable number of Canary Island endemics will eventually become extinct in the future without further habitat loss, suggesting the worst of the extinction crisis on oceanic islands might be yet to come.

Effects of germination inhibition on the dynamics of Quercus ilex stands
Junqing Li,Francois J. Romane +1 more
TL;DR: Comparative studies with Q. pubescens germination revealed that this species was less to the aqueous extracts and soils of Q. ilex coppice stands, which could be a major reason for the poor seed regeneration and suggested a possible comeback ofQ.

A palaeoecological perspective for the conservation and restoration of wetland plant communities in the central French Alps, with particular emphasis on alder carr vegetation
Serge Muller,Cécile Miramont,Hélène Bruneton,Matthieu Carré,Matteo Sottocornola,Mona Court-Picon,Jacques-Louis de Beaulieu,Takeshi Nakagawa,Patrick Schevin +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the past wetland diversity/richness and the controls of Holocene hydroseral dynamics are reconstructed by reconstructing the past water diversity/ richness and the control of Hologene hydrosal dynamics, and discussing on this historical basis their conservation, management and restoration.

Restoring abandoned pasture land with native tree species in Costa Rica: Effects of exotic grass competition and light
Gerardo Celis,Shibu Jose +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, growth and light requirements of six common neotropical tree species Pseudosamanea guachapele (Fabaceae), Tabebuia impetiginosa (Bignoniaceae), Ceiba pentandra (Bombacaceae), Pachira quinata (BombACaceae), Dalbergia retusa, and Tabebus rosea (BIGNoniaceae) were evaluated in an abandoned pasture under contrasting light environments and grass competition.

Unique competitive effects of lianas and trees in a tropical forest understory.
Alexandra J. Wright,Alexandra J. Wright,Michael F. Tobin,Michael F. Tobin,Scott A. Mangan,Scott A. Mangan,Stefan A. Schnitzer,Stefan A. Schnitzer +7 more
TL;DR: Assessment of liana competition in the forest understory over the course of 3 years by removing liana biomass and an equal amount of tree biomass found that growth of understory trees and lianas, as well as planted seedlings, was limited due to competitive effects from both lianaas and trees, though the competitive impacts varied by species, season, and size of neighbors.
