The need for education related to information systems in organizations is discussed, and a curriculum is proposed for an undergraduate program. Material necessary for such pr0gram~/is identified, and courses incorporating it are specified. Detailed~ourse descriptions are presented. Program organization and problems of implementation are discussed.

Curriculum recommendations for undergraduate programs in information systems

A data structure, such as a telecommunications connection map, comprises at least one list of data elements which are stored in a predetermined sequence of locations of a memory device. The structure is updated by moving a portion of the list through the sequence of memory locations so as to insert a new element into, or delete or change an existing element at, a particular position in the structure while maintaining the order of the list. Elements of the structure are accessed in the sequence in which they are stored and the structure is updated during the accessing of the structure by moving elements through the sequence of memory locations. A particular application of this invention is in maintaining a connection map for a telecommunications switch, the map storing connection instructions defining into which ATM cell payload received narrowband call data is assembled.

Management of data structures

An on-line minicomputer information system which has achieved diverse applicability in the medical environment is presented. The motivations for "total medical information systems" are enumerated. The controversy over large-scale computers versus minicomputers is addressed. The design goals and present capabilities of GEMISCH are discussed, and a survey of present applications is included to attest to the versatility of the system.

Although the generation of order statistics from a given distribution has been of considerable interest, the ordering or "sorting" aspect of the problem presents a serious handicap with regard to computer time. This time limitation hinders the effectiveness of many simulation studies. In this paper several shortcut techniques for the systematic generation of a subset of joint order statistics from U (0.1) are simultaneously utilized for various sample sires, and their corresponding generation times are recorded and compared.
