Abstract: algebra of Borel sets and its probability measures; and the strong law of large numbers is used, unstated, on page 4. The emphasis is on asymptotic methods, point estimation (200 pages) and testing hypotheses (170 pages). Treating the 570 pages of the book as a population, a sample suggests a very clear presentation of the mathematical results. Whilst there is a good index of notation, the book is ill-served by a poor general index, and the few tables are badly presented. The material that is covered is treated well but modern topics, like general linear models, are not included. The range of topics that it does attempt to cover are well-presented. The blurb is correct when it say the book 'combines maximum clarity with mathematical rigor'.
