Comparative evaluation of function after surgery for cancer of the alveolobuccal complex
15
TL;DR: Until functional results in patients undergoing lateral segmental resection for alveolobuccal cancer can be improved by better prosthetic techniques, hemiresection of the mandible remains a simple, safe, reliable, and cost-effective option that produces acceptable postoperative function.

Oral Function After Oncological Intervention in the Oral Cavity: A Retrospective Study
Caroline M. Speksnijder,Hilbert W. van der Glas,Andries van der Bilt,Robert J.J. van Es,Esther van der Rijt,Ron Koole +5 more
TL;DR: Assessing self-perceived oral function of patients with oral cavity cancer at different stages of treatment, ie, before oncologic intervention, 5 weeks after intervention, and 5 years after intervention provided supplementary information on how patients experienced their problems with oral function during various phases of oncological treatment.
Development and clinical application of octacalcium phosphate/collagen composites
Shinji Kamakura
- 01 Jan 2019
TL;DR: OCP/Col surpassed bone-regenerative properties of existing bone substitutes, and achieved sufficient bone regeneration without cell transplantation and exogenous osteogenic cytokines, and has excellent resorbability and high cost performance without complicated handling or management system.
Masticatory efficiency before and after surgery in oral cancer patients: comparative study of glossectomy, marginal mandibulectomy and segmental mandibulectomy.
Shunsuke Namaki,Mitsuhiko Matsumoto,Hiroiku Ohba,Hiroshi Tanaka,Noriaki Koshikawa,Mitsuyo Shinohara +5 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that discontinuation of the mandible may lead patients to eat only foods that do not require a substantial amount of chewing, and the quality of life of patients in the marginal mandibulectomy group was considered to be better than that in the segmental mandibuLECTomy group.
Surgical Considerations in Older Adults With Cancer
Beatriz Korc-Grodzicki,Robert J. Downey,Armin Shahrokni,T. Peter Kingham,Snehal G. Patel,Riccardo A. Audisio +5 more
TL;DR: Surgery remains the best modality for treatment of solid tumors, and chronologic age alone should not be a determinant for treatment decisions, with adequate perioperative risk stratification, functional assessment, and oncologic prognostication.
Tongue function in patients treated for malignancies in tongue and/or floor of mouth; a one year prospective study
Caroline M. Speksnijder,Caroline M. Speksnijder,A. van der Bilt,H.W. van der Glas,Ron Koole,M.A.W. Merkx +5 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that surgery had a significant negative influence on tongue function, especially in the group of patients treated with radiotherapy, probably caused by more advanced tumour stage and more extensive reconstructions and related scar tissue.

Functional evaluation following microvascular oromandibular reconstruction of the oral cancer patient: A comparative study of reconstructed and nonreconstructed patients
Mark L. Urken,Daniel Buchbinder,Hubert Weinberg,Carlin Vickery,Alan Sheiner,Robin Parker,Jacqueline Schaefer,Peter M. Som,Arnold Shapiro,William Lawson,Hugh F. Biller +10 more
TL;DR: The functional assessment of patients who underwent primary mandibular reconstruction with enosseous implants placed directly into the vascularized bone flaps shows a clear advantage for the reconstructed patients in almost all categories.

The functional result of mandibular reconstruction.
TL;DR: If patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction were functionally rehabilitated, five parameters were evaluated: deglutition, mastication, cosmesis, diet, and the use of dentures.

Oral cavity reconstruction: An objective assessment of function
TL;DR: A unique comprehensive test series is devised for the purpose that is suitable for use in routine follow‐ups, and capable of providing objective documentation, and among reconstructive modalities employed, the bi‐paddled pectoralis major flap produced the best overall scores.

Evaluation of mandibular reconstruction techniques following resection of malignant tumors in the oral region
TL;DR: Over the past 15 years, reconstruction following excision of malignant oral tumors was performed on 27 patients with segmental resection and five patients with hemiresection of the mandible and a prosthesis was used more frequently by patients when reconstruction was performed using a pedicled osteomyocutaneous flap.
