Abstract: This prospective cohort study investigates whether simple guideline-based asthma management using a 'Step-Up' regimen with the Asthma Control Test score improves asthma control in patients with inadequately controlled asthma in primary care. Seventy out of ninety-three (75%) participants achieved a score of > 19 (good control), and the mean increase in Asthma Control Test score was 6.0 (95% confidence interval: 5.3-6.8), P < 0.001. The improvement was independent of baseline inhaled corticosteroid use.

TL;DR: It is reasonable to expect that in most patients with asthma, control of the disease can and should be achieved and maintained, and the Global Initiative for Asthma recommends a change in approach to asthma management, with asthma control, rather than asthma severity, being the focus of treatment decisions.
