Abstract: A coding method, decoding method, coding system, and decoding system for efficiently variable length coding and variable length decoding quantized data compared with existing ones. Input data is variable length coded by using a variable length coding table 23C or 23D selected among a plurality of variable length coding tables 23C and 23D prepared in accordance with a coding efficiency. Thereby, it is possible to further improve a variable length coding efficiency compared with a case for using only one variable length coding table. As a result, when generating information content equal to that generated by using only one variable length coding table, it is possible to process data quantized with smaller quantized size and further improve the quality of information transmitted as coded data.

TL;DR: In this article, techniques and tools for encoding and decoding motion vector information for video images are described, where a video encoder yields an extended motion vector code by jointly coding, for a set of pixels, a switch code, motion vectors information, and a terminal symbol indicating whether subsequent data is encoded for the set.

Adaptive entropy encoding/decoding for screen capture content
Sergey Smirnov
- 10 Jan 2007
TL;DR: Adaptive entropy encoding and decoding techniques are described in this paper, where the encoder selects between different entropy encoding modes (such as an arithmetic coding mode and a combined run length/Huffman encoding mode), which allow to emphasize bitrate reduction at some times and encoding speed at other times.

Chroma motion vector derivation for interlaced forward-predicted fields
Thomas W. Holcomb
- 02 Sep 2004
TL;DR: In this paper, a video encoder or decoder determines a prevailing polarity among luma motion vectors for a macroblock and then determines a chroma motion vector for the macroblock based at least in part upon one or more of the luma vectors having the prevailing polativity.

TL;DR: In this paper, a motion compensated prediction interframe coding (PCIIC) system is proposed, which first measures characteristics regarding the fineness of a pattern or texture of a picture, which is represented by an input television signal and is then divided into a group of continuous blocks each quantized by using a quantization step size.
