Abstract: This invention is characterized by apparatus for detecting whether an object having information to be read-out is located in a scanning light beam. Means are provided for starting or stopping operation of the light source, passing or cutting off the light beam by the detected output. The apparatus includes means for converting the light beam emitted from a light source to a scanning light beam by using a deflection means, means for applying the scanning light beam onto the object and means for reading-out the information contained in the object from the light beam reflected by the object.

Narrow-bodied, single-and twin-windowed portable laser scanning head for reading bar code symbols
Howard Shepard,Edward Barkan,Jerome Swartz +2 more
- 18 Oct 1982
TL;DR: In this paper, a narrow-bodied, single-and twin-windowed, hand-held, laser scanning head for reading bar code symbols includes at least one window mounted at the rear region of the head, and through which either the incident beam going to the symbol and/or the reflected beam returning from the symbol, passes unobstructedly and exteriorly of, and past, the front and intermediate body regions of the leader.

Scan pattern generators for bar code symbol readers
Mark Krichever,Boris Metlitsky +1 more
- 15 Jun 1990
TL;DR: In this article, multiple scan line pattern generators including scan patterns composed of intersecting lines are superimposed over bar code symbols to be read, and at least one of the scan lines is automatically moved closer to and further away from a reader to perform a zooming function to read far-out and close-in symbols.

Means for reading and interpreting color-coded identification labels
J Schmidt
- 18 Aug 1970
TL;DR: In this article, an improved system for automatically reading color-coded identification labels by scanning an incident light beam there across and sensing the color of reflected light was presented, where two laser sources were provided for producing light beams having approximately optimum wavelength spectra for reflection from colored reflective strips within the label and including means for effectively combining such beams into a single incident beam for use in scanning the identification label.

Optical bar code reading method and apparatus having an x scan pattern
Richard Allen Connell
- 29 Jun 1972
TL;DR: An optical code reader employs a flying spot scanner repetitively tracing an X scan pattern to read a linear bar code printed on a ticket regardless of ticket orientation during movement therepast, wherein the height of the bar code exceeds its length by an amount dependent on the scan pattern repetition rate and the ticket velocity as mentioned in this paper.
