Abstract: The Code of Hammurabi is a collection of at least 282 ancient Mesopotamian laws that King Hammurabi promulgated near the end of his reign (1792–1750 bce). Hammurabi's Code represents one of the first written attempts by an ancient civilization to systematically codify civil and criminal laws. The Code is important to penologists and criminologists because it demonstrates how one of the oldest known civilizations responded to criminal violations. Although the original text was lost around 1565 bce and not rediscovered until 1901, most of the principles inherent in the Code became points of reference for future legal and religious development.
