Die Globalisierung kommunikativer und okonomischer Beziehungen ist mit Veranderungen des kognitiven Zugriffs auf Wirklichkeit verbunden. Zum einen haben wir es ganz allgemein mit komplexen Wirkungen der wachsenden Inzidenz von Wissen – Stichwort „Wissensgesellschaft“ (Stehr 1994) – zu tun. Dabei mag es sich um eine blose Koinzidenz von Veranderungen produktions- und innovationstechnologischer Art und solchen des okonomischen Verkehrs handeln, vielleicht aber auch um mehr.

Analysis of data from a survey of employed adults in Detroit indicates that frequency of intoxication is associated with a masculine self-orientation among men and a feminine self-orientation among women during alcohol use. The study calls attention to the importance of fathers' drinking, life events, social class relations and a generalized alienation from self, work and society for understanding frequency of intoxication and masculine and feminine orientations during alcohol use. A path analysis suggests that the men and women who become intoxicated may regain a sense of self and relationships to others that they do not have in sober everyday life. Implications for future research on heavy drinking and self-orientations during alcohol use are discussed.

Intoxication and self-orientations during alcohol use: an empirical assessment of the relationship and of its determinants among employed men and women

Although women have gained entrance into some of the top professional occupations, they appear to have achieved few economic gains from this progress. The extensive occupational segregation existing between men and women in all occupations handicaps investigations of the sources of this persistent inequality. This article proposes an exploratory method for identifying occupations containing comparable work and presents an analysis of male‐female wage differences within a subset of the highly skilled professional occupations. Using a cluster analysis of the characteristics of jobs available in the 1977 Dictionary of Occupational Titles, three clusters of high‐skill occupations are identified. Next, a sample of labor‐force participants, aged 25 to 35 years and employed in these occupations, is used in an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression of hourly wages on a standard set of labor market traits.
