Abstract: The study of achievement goals has illuminated basic motivational processes, though controversy surrounds their nature and impact. In 5 studies, including a longitudinal study in a difficult premed course, the authors show that the impact of learning and performance goals depends on how they are operationalized. Active learning goals predicted active coping, sustained motivation, and higher achievement in the face of challenge. Among performance goals, ability-linked goals predicted withdrawal and poorer performance in the face of challenge (but provided a “boost” to performance when students met with success); normative goals did not predict decrements in motivation or performance; and outcome goals (wanting a good grade) were in fact equally related to learning goals and ability goals. Ways in which the findings address discrepancies in the literature are discussed.

The Influence of Growth Mindset on the Mental Health and Life Events of College Students
TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper found that individuals with a growth mindset are less prone to mental health problems than those with a fixed mindset, and that the students within the growth mindset group scored significantly lower on mental health issues and stress due to life events than the students in the fixed mindset group.
Linking University Students’ Willingness to Learn to Their Recollections of Motivation at Secondary School
TL;DR: In this article, the role of recollected school-based motivation on university students' willingness to use new learning opportunities was investigated, based on three motivational theories, and two broad motivational dimensions for an economic description of motivational orientations, inward and outward, were suggested to differentially predict the formation of task value.
Student Perceptions of Teachers’ Mindset Beliefs in the Classroom Setting
TL;DR: The authors explored the relationship between student ability beliefs and teacher ability beliefs in classroom settings and found that Student Mindset is related to Teacher Mindset (TM) and fully mediated by Student Perception of Teacher Minds (SPTM).
Dispositional and situational learning goals and children's self-regulation.

TL;DR: Children assigned to the learning goal instruction were more likely to persist at the task until the end of the allotted time, displayed more on-task behaviour and engaged in more autonomous help-seeking.

Motivation of University Students Towards the Use of Information and Communication Technologies and Their Relation to Learning Styles
TL;DR: On examination of the variables corresponding to the university where student study and the latter’s gender were examined, certain differences appeared, such as the prevalence of some learning styles in male participants.

Carol S. Dweck,Ellen L. Leggett +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a research-based model that accounts for these patterns in terms of underlying psychological processes, and place the model in its broadest context and examine its implications for our understanding of motivational and personality processes.
Motivational and self-regulated learning components of classroom academic performance.
TL;DR: In this article, a correlational study examined relationships between motivational orientation, self-regulated learning, and classroom academic performance for 173 seventh graders from eight science and seven English classes.
Classrooms: Goals, structures, and student motivation.
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the classroom learning environment in relation to achievement goal theory of motivation and argue for an identification of classroom structures that can contribute to a mastery orientation, a systematic analysis of these structures, and a determination of how these structures relate to each other.
