Chomsky on Meaning
TL;DR: In this paper, a close examination of the bases for Noam Chomsky's position on meaning shows that it should be rejected, and it is argued that such a stance should not be rejected.

Abstract: This paper critically examines Chomsky's position on meaning, considering its development over the years, its significance for other areas of grammatical theory and for related areas outside linguistics, and its methodological, empirical, and philosophical bases. Focus is on the points of disagreement between Chomsky's position and the author's, and it is argued that a close examination of the bases for Chomsky's position shows that it should be rejected.*

Literal Meaning and Psychological Theory
TL;DR: It is suggested that the distinctions between literal and metaphoric meanings, and between semantics and pragmatics, have little psychological validity.

Adverbs and logical form: a linguistically realistic theory
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the inventory of expression types in Logical Form (LF) is just that provided by classical predicate logics: variables and constants, n-place constant predicates, quantifiers that operate on sentential expressions to 'bind' variables in the operands (i.e. in the sentences with which they combine), and truth functional connectives.

Resolution of quantifier scope ambiguities
TL;DR: Structural principles, that is, those which refer to the syntactic or semantic positions of the quantified phrases, are investigated, suggesting that alternative interpretations of the ambiguity may be initially considered in parallel, followed by selection of the single interpretation that best satisfies the principles.

The Optimization of Discourse Anaphora
TL;DR: Three new applications of the extended OT Centering model are described: generation of linguistic forms from meanings, the evaluation andoptimization of extended texts, and the interpretation of accentedpronouns.

Word and Object
Willard Van Orman Quine
- 01 Jan 1960
TL;DR: This edition offers a new preface by Quine's student and colleague Dagfinn Follesdal that describes the never-realized plans for a second edition of Word and Object, in which Quine would offer a more unified treatment of the public nature of meaning, modalities, and propositional attitudes.

Semantic Interpretation in Generative Grammar
Ray Jackendoff
- 01 Jan 1972
TL;DR: This book investigates a wide variety of semantic rules, stating them in considerable detail and extensively treating their consequences for the syntactic component of the grammar, and proposes radically new approaches to the so-called Crossover Principle, the control problem for complement subjects, parentheticals, and the interpretation of nonspecific noun phrases.
