TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the limitations on the power flow transfer through a VSC-HVDC system connected to a weak grid and showed that an additional reactive power (Q) support of 0.2 pu can maintain the transfer of full power without the need for oversizing the VSC.

Abstract: The connection point of a VSC-HVDC for the transmission of RES electricity, can be located far from the large generation plants, leading to a weak grid connection. This paper analyses the limitations on the power flow transfer through a VSC-HVDC system connected to a weak grid. First, the impact of the angle and voltage stability limits and the VSC rating are examined. Then, the power transfer capability curves of a VSC connected to a weak grid of an SCR of 1.1 pu by means of an L-interface are calculated. Finally, the impact of providing additional reactive power (Q) support is investigated through utilising a capacitor at the connection point. It has been shown that an additional Q-support of 0.2 pu can maintain the transfer of full power without the need for oversizing the VSC.

Analysis of controller bandwidth interactions for vector-controlled VSC connected to very weak AC grids
TL;DR: A small-signal model is derived to quantify the maximum active power transfer in a very weak grid across a much wider range of controller bandwidths than has previously been investigated, and a stability bubble of safe operating points is established.
Current Error Based Compensations for VSC Current Control in Weak Grids for Wind Farm Applications
Kamyab Givaki,Dong Chen,Lie Xu +2 more
TL;DR: A novel current control strategy is proposed for voltage source converters connected to weak grids using conventional current vector control with additional current error based voltage angle and magnitude compensations, which can significantly improve system stability.
Impact of Grid Strength and Impedance Characteristics on the Maximum Power Transfer Capability of Grid-Connected Inverters
TL;DR: A performance index is proposed to quantify the performance of the system with different parameter values and it is revealed that power grids with a higher short circuit ratio (SCR) or lower resistance-inductance ratio (R/X) provide higher power transfer capability.

Analysis and Enhancement of Active Power Transfer Capability for DFIG-Based WTs in Very Weak Grid
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a comprehensive study for doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) to analyze and enhance their active power transfer capability in a weak grid, and the analysis results indicated that both the rotor current limit and the power angle will affect the active power transmission capability.
