Abstract: Cadmium is a heavy metal of considerable toxicity with destructive impact on most organ systems. It is widely distributed in humans, the chief sources of contamination being cigarette smoke, welding, and contaminated food and beverages. Toxic impacts are discussed and appear to be proportional to body burden of cadmium. Detoxification of cadmium with EDTA and other chelators is possible and has been shown to be therapeutically beneficial in humans and animals when done using established protocols.

Environmental Hazards of Heavy Metal Pollution and Toxicity: A Review
TL;DR: The effects of heavy metal pollution on flora and fauna have been extensively studied in human, animal and plants showing various toxicological impacts of toxic metals, such as liver, kidney, brain along with systemic disease conditions as mentioned in this paper .
Synthesis and Characterization of Mesoporous Materials Functionalized with Phosphinic Acid Ligand and Their Capability to Remove Cd(II)
Khayra Mersellem,D. Bouazza,Irene Malpartida,Pedro Maireles-Torres,A. Boos,Hary Demey,H. Miloudi +6 more
TL;DR: This study synthesizes mesoporous materials functionalized with phosphinic acid ligand and evaluates their cadmium removal efficiency from nitrate medium, with calcined and impregnated mesoporous silica showing the best performance and maximum sorption capacity of 22.16 mg/g.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae quiescent cells: cadmium resistance and adaptive response
Emiliya Ivanova Pisareva,Anna Atanasova Tomova,Ventsislava Yankova Petrova +2 more
TL;DR: This study investigates cadmium resistance and adaptive response in Saccharomyces cerevisiae quiescent cells, finding similar IC50 values for diploid and haploid strains, but varying ROS and protein carbonylation levels, and increased antioxidant defense system expression in response to elevated cadmium concentrations.
Optimization of Cadmium Ions Biosorption Onto Trichoderma Fungi
Leili Mohammadi,Mehdi Sadeghi Malvajerdi,Abbas Randar,George Z. Kyzas +3 more
TL;DR: This study optimizes cadmium ions biosorption onto Trichoderma fungi using a central composite design, achieving a 98.8% removal efficiency under optimal conditions of pH 6, 120-minute contact time, and 25 mg/L initial cadmium concentration.
Cadmium Nephropathy and Smoking
Robert G Price
Abstract: Cadmium is a non-essential metal which because of its extensive use in industry and agriculture presents a worldwide health hazard. Long-term exposure to cadmium results in nephropathy characterised by interstitial nephritis affecting the renal tubules. In addition to occupational exposure, cadmium can contaminate food and water increasing the number of people at risk of developing chronic renal disease. It is now known that smoking is an independent risk factor for renal disease. The current knowledge of the molecular mechanisms initiating and progressing cadmium nephrotoxicity is now partly understood and research on the molecular effects of nicotine on the kidney is ongoing. The exacerbation of renal disease by smoking is an increasing problem. It is concluded that where there is potential exposure to cadmium, either occupationally or environmentally, individuals should be encouraged to cease smoking.

Composition of the Continental Crust
Roberta L. Rudnick,Shan Gao +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the present-day composition of the continental crust, the methods employed to derive these estimates, and the implications of continental crust composition for the formation of the continents, Earth differentiation, and its geochemical inventories are discussed.
The composition of the continental crust
TL;DR: In this paper, a new calculation of the crustal composition is based on the proportions of upper crust (UC) to felsic lower crust (FLC) to mafic lower-crust (MLC) of about 1.6:0.4.
