Abstract: Collection of blood from small laboratory animals is necessary for a wide range of scientific research and there are a number of efficient methods available for that. It is important that blood sample collection from experimental animals should be least stressful because stress will affect the outcome of the study. Various regulatory agencies and guidelines have restricted the use of animals and the techniques used for blood collection in laboratory animals. This article deals with the approved blood collection techniques for laboratory animals like rodents, lagomorphs and nonrodents. Permission of the Institute Animal Ethics Committee has been obtained for the use of animals for demonstrating the techniques.

Urinary Excretion of Iohexol as a Permeability Marker in a Mouse Model of Intestinal Inflammation: Time Course, Performance and Welfare Considerations.
Victoria Ortín-Piqueras,Victoria Ortín-Piqueras,Tobias L. Freitag,Leif C. Andersson,Sanna Lehtonen,Seppo Meri,Thomas Spillmann,Rafael Frias +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the performance of an iohexol IP test in mice was examined, and the authors concluded that a 6-hour cumulative urine sample appears sufficient to evaluate small IP to Iohexol, improving animal welfare by reducing cage periods.

TL;DR: SV sampling reduce the number of animals in different Pharmacokinetic (PK) (mouse) and Toxicokinetics (TK) ( mouse and rat) studies by using serial draws, offers reduction and refinement over the othersampling techniques with minimal preparation upfront and with a potential to replace them.
Gene network analysis for identification of microRNA biomarkers for asthma
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors used the house dust mite (HDM) mouse model of allergic inflammation to identify miRNA biomarker signatures for asthma and identified a panel of 30 potential biomarker candidates for asthma.

Methods of Blood Collection in the Mouse
Janet Hoff
- 01 Jan 2000
TL;DR: Blood collection is used for a wide variety of scientific studies, and there are a number of efficient methods available, but it is important to remember that blood collection, because it can stress the animals, may have an impact on the outcome of research data.
Saphenous vein puncture for blood sampling of the mouse, rat, hamster, gerbil, guineapig, ferret and mink
TL;DR: A humane and practical alternative to cardiac and retro-orbital puncture, in species where venepuncture has traditionally been regarded as problematic, is described for blood collection from the lateral saphenous vein.

Chronic vascular catheterization in the rat: comparison of three techniques.
TL;DR: It is concluded that for long-term sampling of blood in the rat, the femoral artery catheterization procedure is preferable in terms of patency and postsurgical weight loss.
