Abstract: Collection of blood from small laboratory animals is necessary for a wide range of scientific research and there are a number of efficient methods available for that. It is important that blood sample collection from experimental animals should be least stressful because stress will affect the outcome of the study. Various regulatory agencies and guidelines have restricted the use of animals and the techniques used for blood collection in laboratory animals. This article deals with the approved blood collection techniques for laboratory animals like rodents, lagomorphs and nonrodents. Permission of the Institute Animal Ethics Committee has been obtained for the use of animals for demonstrating the techniques.

Arsenic Exposure and Glucose Intolerance/Insulin Resistance in Estrogen-Deficient Female Mice
Chun-Fa Huang,Ching-Yao Yang,Ding-Cheng Chan,Ching-Chia Wang,Kuo-How Huang,Chin-Ching Wu,Keh-Sung Tsai,Rong-Sen Yang,Shing-Hwa Liu +8 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that estrogen deficiency plays an important role in arsenic-altered glucose metabolism/homeostasis in females and arsenic exposure and glucose intolerance/insulin resistance in estrogen-deficient female mice is investigated.

Anti-arthritic activity of ethanolic extract of Tridax procumbens (Linn.) in Sprague Dawley rats.
TL;DR: The whole plant extract of T. procumbens showed significant anti-arthritic activity against FCA-induced arthritis in female SD rats, comparable with that of indomethacin.

Antiurolithiatic Effects of Solanum xanthocarpum Fruit Extract on Ethylene-Glycol-Induced Nephrolithiasis in Rats.
TL;DR: The result indicates the antiurolithiatic activity of S. xanthocarpum mediated possibly by CaOX crystal inhibition, diuretic, antioxidant and maintaining balance between stone promoter and inhibitor constituents, and this study rationalized its medicinal use in urolithiasis.

Methods of Blood Collection in the Mouse
Janet Hoff
- 01 Jan 2000
TL;DR: Blood collection is used for a wide variety of scientific studies, and there are a number of efficient methods available, but it is important to remember that blood collection, because it can stress the animals, may have an impact on the outcome of research data.
Saphenous vein puncture for blood sampling of the mouse, rat, hamster, gerbil, guineapig, ferret and mink
TL;DR: A humane and practical alternative to cardiac and retro-orbital puncture, in species where venepuncture has traditionally been regarded as problematic, is described for blood collection from the lateral saphenous vein.
