Abstract: We review recent progress in the construction of black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity theories. Starting from spin-3 gravity and working our way toward the theory of an infinite tower of higher spins coupled to matter, we show how to harness higher spin gauge invariance to consistently generalize familiar notions of black holes. We review the construction of black holes with conserved higher spin charges and the computation of their partition functions to leading asymptotic order. In view of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (CFT) correspondence as applied to certain vector-like conformal field theories with extended conformal symmetry, we successfully compare to CFT calculations in a generalized Cardy regime. A brief recollection of pertinent aspects of ordinary gravity is also given. This article is part of a special issue of Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical devoted to ‘Higher spin theories and holography’.

From Lorentzian to Galilean (2+1) gravity: Drinfelʼd doubles, quantization and noncommutative spacetimes
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the canonical classical r-matrix arising from the Drinfel-d double (DD) structure underlying the two-fold centrally extended (2+1) Galilean and Newton-Hooke (NH) Lie algebras (with either zero or non-zero cosmological constant Λ, respectively) originates as a well-defined non-relativistic contraction of a specific class of canonical rmatrices associated with the DD structure of the (anti)-de Sitter Lie algebra.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider the stability of test fields propagating in the vicinity of the Cauchy horizon associated to the naked central singularity and show that the fields undergo a blueshift as they approach the horizon.

The covariant action of higher spin black holes in three dimensions
TL;DR: In this article, a variational principle compatible with Dirichlet boundary conditions for higher spin theories in the Fefferman-Graham gauge was proposed, and the canonical free energy of higher spin black holes was computed directly from the Euclidean, covariant, on-shell action.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a more realistic estimate of the detectable GW transient range including the effect of glitches, based on a fixed false-alarm probability (FAP) model.

Particle Creation by Black Holes
TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that quantum mechanical effects cause black holes to create and emit particles as if they were hot bodies with temperature, which leads to a slow decrease in the mass of the black hole and to its eventual disappearance.
Gauge Theory Correlators from Non-Critical String Theory
TL;DR: In this paper, a boundary of the anti-deSitter space analogous to a cut-off on the Liouville coordinate of the two-dimensional string theory is introduced to obtain certain Green's functions in 3+1-dimensional N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with a large number of colors via non-critical string theory.
