Abstract: We review recent progress in the construction of black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity theories. Starting from spin-3 gravity and working our way toward the theory of an infinite tower of higher spins coupled to matter, we show how to harness higher spin gauge invariance to consistently generalize familiar notions of black holes. We review the construction of black holes with conserved higher spin charges and the computation of their partition functions to leading asymptotic order. In view of the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (CFT) correspondence as applied to certain vector-like conformal field theories with extended conformal symmetry, we successfully compare to CFT calculations in a generalized Cardy regime. A brief recollection of pertinent aspects of ordinary gravity is also given. This article is part of a special issue of Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical devoted to ‘Higher spin theories and holography’.

‘Quantum hairs’ and entropy of the quantum isolated horizon from Chern-Simons theory
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that the LQG description of the quantum macrostates of black hole horizons, modeled as quantum isolated horizons (QIHs), is completely characterized in terms of two independent integer-valued "quantum hairs", viz, the coupling constant of quantum Chern-Simons (CS) theory describing QIH dynamics, and the number of punctures produced by the bulk spin network edges piercing the isolated horizon (which act as pointlike sources for the CS fields).

Constraining the Cardoso?Pani?Rico metric with future observations of SgrA*
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the combination of three promising techniques in the framework of the Cardoso-Pani-Rico parametrization: the observation of blobs of plasma orbiting near the innermost stable circular orbit, the detection of the BH shadow, and timing observations of a radio pulsar in a compact orbit.

T T in JT gravity and BF gauge theory
TL;DR: Ebert et al. as mentioned in this paper considered T T -type deformations of the (0+1)-dimensional dual to this 2D BF theory and interpreted the deformation as a modification of the BF theory boundary conditions.

The Large N limit of superconformal field theories and supergravity
TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the large-N limits of certain conformal field theories in various dimensions include in their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes, spheres, and other compact manifolds.

The Large N Limit of Superconformal Field Theories and Supergravity
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the super-conformal field theory on the brane decouples from the bulk of the field theory in a low energy limit.

Particle Creation by Black Holes
TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that quantum mechanical effects cause black holes to create and emit particles as if they were hot bodies with temperature, which leads to a slow decrease in the mass of the black hole and to its eventual disappearance.
Gauge Theory Correlators from Non-Critical String Theory
TL;DR: In this paper, a boundary of the anti-deSitter space analogous to a cut-off on the Liouville coordinate of the two-dimensional string theory is introduced to obtain certain Green's functions in 3+1-dimensional N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with a large number of colors via non-critical string theory.
