Black holes as effective geometries

Abstract: Gravitational entropy arises in string theory via coarse graining over an underlying space of microstates. In cases with enough supersymmetry, it has been possible to explicitly construct such microstates in spacetime and understand how coarse graining of non-singular, horizon-free objects can lead to an effective description as an extremal black hole. We discuss how these results arise in type II string theory on AdS5 × S5 and on AdS3 × S3 × T4 that preserve 16 and eight supercharges, respectively. For such a picture of black holes as effective geometries to extend to cases with a finite horizon area, the scale of quantum effects in gravity would have to extend well beyond the vicinity of the singularities in the effective theory. By studying examples in M-theory on AdS3 × S2 × CY that preserve four supersymmetries, we show how this can happen.

The Information paradox: A Pedagogical introduction
TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that small corrections to the leading order Hawking computation cannot remove the entanglement between the radiation and the hole, and that one cannot explain away the information paradox by invoking AdS/CFT duality.
Testing the nature of dark compact objects: a status report
TL;DR: In this article, the authors overview the physics of exotic dark compact objects and their observational status, including the observational evidence for black holes with current and future experiments, and provide an overview of these objects.
An infalling observer in AdS/CFT
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the experience of an observer falling into a black hole using the AdS/CFT correspondence, and reconstruct the local bulk operators measured by the observer along his trajectory outside the black hole.
Transcending the ensemble: baby universes, spacetime wormholes, and the order and disorder of black hole information
Donald Marolf,Henry Maxfield +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the role of null states in the evolution of the Page curve has been investigated, and it has been shown that the dimension of the asymptotically AdS Hilbert space turns out to be a random variable Z, whose value can be less than the naive number k of independent states.
Echoes of Kerr-like wormholes

TL;DR: In this paper, the waveform of echoes in static and stationary, traversable wormholes in which perturbations are governed by a symmetric effective potential is studied. But the waveforms are dominated by the wormhole quasinormal frequency nearest to the fundamental black hole frequency that controls the primary signal.

Massless black holes and black rings as effective geometries of the D1–D5 system
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compute correlation functions in the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence to study the emergence of effective spacetime geometries describing complex underlying microstates, and show that almost all micro states of fixed charges lie close to certain 'typical' configurations.
Coarse-Graining the Lin-Maldacena Geometries
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that at large N, where the number of vacuum states is large, there is a natural ''macroscopic'' description of typical states, giving rise to a set of coarse-grained geometries.
Instability of nonsupersymmetric smooth geometries
TL;DR: Jejjala et al. as discussed by the authors showed that nonsupersymmetric solutions of type IIb supergravity are all classically unstable and pointed out the end point of this instability and argued that the solutions decay to supersymmetric configurations.
Microstate Geometries and Entropy Enhancement
TL;DR: A review of the recent progress in constructing smooth horizonless geometries with the same structure as a black hole from infinity down to the neighborhood of the black-hole horizon can be found in this paper.
Supersymmetric AdS5 black holes

TL;DR: The first supersymmetric, asymptotically AdS5, black hole solutions were presented in this article, which form a 1-parameter family of solutions of minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity.
